Core FTP LE version 2.1

If you have a web site, you will usually need FTP (File Transfer Protocol) software, to upload (and download) files to your web space.
Core FTP handles this basic task easily, but also has a wealth of features for more advanced users. Including SecureFTP, optional integration with Internet Explorer, stop and resume of transfers, and site to site transfers.

The main interface is user friendly and functional, if not pretty. With your local files displayed on the left and remote files or the right.
There is a choice of eleven different window layouts and some items can be turned off and panes resized.

Core FTP LE, main interface.
Note: To reduce image file size, this is a simplified graphical representation of the program window.

Under the options button a large amount of settings can be altered, but I would stick with the well chosen defaults, unless you know exactly what you are doing. All I altered was the date format.
Newcomers may find the large number of buttons somewhat intimidating, but for normal use, most of them can be ignored.

Uploading, or downloading of files, is simply a matter of clicking on the transfer button, or dragging files between the panes. A progress bar shows how your transfers are proceeding.
All the normal options are present, to rename, or delete files, create folders, etc (note that some servers may not allow some actions).

One thing I wasn't very keen on, was that the Ascii mode removes carriage returns from HTML pages. While this doesn't affect how the page displays, it does alter the file size, which I normally check against the original, to see if the transfer is correct.

I found Core FTP LE very easy to use and connections were quick and reliable, with nice steady transfers.
A reasonable help file is included with the program and there is some extra help and an FAQ online. Which should be enough to get newcomers to FTP started.
I normally use FTP Commander (version 7), which has a neater interface, but less features. But if that wasn't available, I would be happy to swap to Core FTP LE.

Whiz FTP

Whiz FTP is about as simple as FTP software can get, while still being very useful.
Creating a new connection is simple, just enter a title for your host, the upload address of your web space (for example, upload.ntlworld.com), your log in name and password.

Whiz FTP, a simple FTP program.

Once connected the contents of your webspace are displayed in the program window and files/folders can dragged to, or from the space. To move up through your folder hierarchy, use the "up" button to the right.
The basic tools are present allowing you to create a new folder, or delete files/folders.

Whiz FTP has no help file, but it is so simple to use, even newcomers to FTP should have no problems. Whiz FTP is an ideal choice for the occasional user, although those people with more complex sites, will probably prefer a more advanced multi window program.

FreshFTP.

FreshFTP is used for transferring files to and from your web space, via FTP (file transfer protocol).
The program has the standard two pane design, with files on your computer showed on the left and files on your web site shown on the right. Files can be transferred using the central buttons, from the right click menu, or by drag & drop. Transfer progress is shown at the bottom of the screen.
FreshFTP is quite simple to set up and use and seems reliable, but the help file is not detailed enough for a first time user.
There were a few minor niggles, the default setting options are not great and you will need to change the file transfer option from "resume" to "overwrite", if you ever want to edit your site! Also the file lists don't always auto refresh, which I found a bit irritating.
But overall, not a bad little program, with a nice looking interface (you can modify the interface, I turned off the message log, to give myself larger file lists).

Note: You need to register (for free) FreshFTP after 11 days. To protect your email address, I would advise using a temporary email address, such as the ten minute mail.
