How to
create your own web site, a simple guide.
Introduction.
I received an email last week, from one of my site
visitors. Shadylady had read my review of the Web Album
Generator and asked if I could write an article about
setting up a web site, as all the magazine articles she
had read were too complicated and she didn't know where
to start.
I did have some reservations about trying to cover such a
vast subject, as
despite running a site for four years, I'm not an expert
and by modern standards, my site is very simple and I
have no knowledge of the more exotic aspects, such as PHP,
or databases like SQL.
However Shadylady assured me that she just wanted to
create a simple site, to display some pictures of her
hobby, family and bits of "this and that". And
that she didn't want to know the more exotic aspects of
web site making.
Well, simple I can do. Keep in mind that the methods I
will suggest, are just a few of the countless ways that a
web site can be created. There is no right, or wrong way
of creating a web site, just lots of different ways.
I shall concentrate on proper web sites, but there are
other more instant choices, such as a blog, which is
very easy to create and maintain and could be a good
choice, if you just want to post articles and pictures.
I signed up for and created this blog site in
about fifteen minutes, it's that easy.
But a proper web site gives you more flexibility,
allowing you to design your own layout and add almost any
content.
I shall split this article into several parts, as it will
be fairly long, especially if I start waffling (oops,
started already).
To keep things simple, I have created a glossary of web site terms, for reference.
