Created 31st October 1998, Last Updated 25th February 2006
This web site is intended to give English speaking people a resource for finding information on the web to help learn various languages. I originally created this site for Japanese and included sections on history and culture. Since then there have been more links sites, directory and search engines so the original site became rather redundant. The one area that was still of use was the section on language learning because the other directory resources did not in general give detailed reviews.
This site was first placed on my Compuserve site, but for technical reasons it was difficult to keep it maintained. This updated version will be hosted on my NTL site and so should be easier to keep up to date.
This new site has ( or rather will have once I get around to them ) a wider range of languages but a more limited set of sections for each language. The languages I cover are the ones in which I have developed a passing interest over the years, I do not claim any proficiency in any of them. This site also limits itself to just language related sites and leave the culture and history sites to others.
I have only included sites that can be viewed effectively with a simple browser running in a secure mode; i.e. no sites that require Java, Javascript or ActiveX features are included ( although some sites may have optional extras that do require these abominations ).
Yes, but what does "FargleWeb" actually mean? While going through all the pages of relevance to this site I often found it hard to distinguish between some sites with similar content. I decided that my site should have a distinct and memorable name. This will also aid finding references on the web using a search engine. So if you add a link to my page please label it with "FargleWeb" - note: it is one word.
