Personal Profile

I have been involved at all levels within British Judo and I have reached the highest level.  I have competed in two Olympic Games, 1984 Los Angeles where I gained an Olympic bronze medal and 1988 Seoul, where I was British team captain. In 2001 I was awarded an honorary 6th Dan Red and White belt.

I have also been employed as the British Judo Association Junior Men's National Coach/team manager for the potential squad. During this time there was significant success within the team gaining medals in Junior A class tournaments at both the
European and World Championships. Many of the players
I taught have gone on to gain senior success.

I have also furthered my education by gaining a Diploma in Sports Coaching at Herriott Watt University, Edinburgh and in 2005 I completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sports Studies at St Martins College, Lancaster.  I keep up to date with current
issues and attend continuing professional development courses within both sport and Judo which enhances my specialist
knowledge within sports development and coaching.

I have recently been appointed Assistant Area Technical Director for the North West. I update and modify coaching standards in-line with the Sport England Coaching review and recommendations.  I am also a member of the British Schools Judo commission where my role is to contribute to overseeing the strategic
direction of Schools Judo.

I am employed as a part-time Associate Lecturer in Performance Coaching for Judo at Cumbria University, both at Lancaster and Newton Rigg. Here I have devised and implemented a coaching package to talented young sports students who are looking for a career in performance coaching

I have recently been invited to join a development programmed run by Sport Resolutions National Anti- Doping panel a professional organisation set up by Sport England as an independent body. This opportunity will allow me to gain a unique insight into the appeal process in which athletes undertake in relation to drug's allegations.

I am also very keen to continue my personal development and research within Sport Coaching and Sports Development by undertaking a Higher Degree and any courses accredited by the Higher Education Academy. Through my general involvement in sport as well as my personal specific achievements I believe
allows me to be a role model which inspires and motivates  young people.
