* * * * Star Award Oblivion is the worlds first Vertical Drop Rollercoaster and can be found at Alton Towers. It is worth noting however that Oblivion is no longer the only Vertical Drop Rollercoaster, there is now a replica in Japan called G5. Oblivion is part of the area of the park known as X - Sector. This is a futuristic area with all four rides (Oblivion, Black Hole, Energizer and Enterprise) being themed in a similar manner. Oblivion was opened in 1998 along with X - Sector which replaced the ageing Fantasy Land. After spirallig through the well themed Oblivion queue line you cross a bridge into the station. Once seated in your 8 per row car consisting of 2 rows you proceed up the steep lift hill. Once you reach the top you turn 90º on a flat corner propelled by tyres beneath the train. It is now that the fun really begins. As the car approaches the precipice you are abruptly stopped and held over the forthcoming vertical drop. Speakers warn you - "Don't Look Down" before the holding brake releases you and you plunge into a hole and a cloud of steam. No sooner have you stopped falling vertically you re-amerge from the hole and travel up into a steeply banked 180º turn then up into the brake run. After the break run you make your way slowly round a left hand corner and back to the station. Click on the thumbnails below to see the picture in its proper format.
