* * Star Award The Corkscrew is somehat a classic coaster here in the UK. It was the first Rollercoaster to perform a corkcrew here in the UK. It was introduced by Alton Towers in 1980 and although it has never been moved it was given a new lick of paint, new cars and slight theming last year to form the centre piece of the new area of the park called Ug Land. It replaced the old Festival Park which was looking tacky and needed a new look. As the name suggests the highlight of the ride are the Corkscrews of which there are two. They come after the first drop and round the first 180º turn left. The good thing about the drop of this ride is that it gives decent airtime, very unusual for a steel coaster. After decending you are raised back up a small hill before dropping again giving the sensation of coming out of your seat. Other than the first drop and Corkscrews this ride is rather lifeless. It has over half a mile of track, most of which is meaningless corners and bumps that are boring at best but utter rubbish most of the time. Despite the somewhat dated layout and style this ride still pulls the crowds and a lengthy queue can be expected on busy days increased further by the lack of Virtual Queueing on the Corkscrew.
