At the Taunton Assizes on 3rd April 1801 a Samuel Tout, otherwise Greenslade, aged about 35 and Robert Westcote 23, both labourers and born at Wiveliscombe, were tried for rioting, breaking open Richard Griffey’s bakery at Old Cleeve and forcing Mrs.Griffey to sell 30 loaves at the reduced price of 10d. each instead of 1/6d. They were sentenced to death and with 7 other men were hanged at Stongallows, Taunton on 15th April 1801. John Westcote confessed his guilt but not Samuel who insisted to the end that he had paid for the bread. At the trial Samuel denied he had a pickaxe in his hand with which he forced the baker’s door open, possibly he had been framed. The Chaplin at the gaol also noted that he had constantly claimed his innocence. [Robin Bush, Somerset Stories Dovecote Press]. At the same time George Tout, perhaps his brother, was hanged for sheep stealing [ref. Sherborne Mercury 25th April 1801, the Western Flying Post 20th April 1801 gives Robert’s age as 30]
