| Postal Workers’ Dispute - London Update 20.11.09 | |||
|
At this afternoon’s meeting of the London
Divisional Committee it was reported that after some six meetings with
London Royal Mail they are still refusing to honour the full terms of the
interim agreement.
All they want to do is make more cuts and introduce “absorption” without re-engaging about the changes they have already imposed with regard to job cuts, revisions, part-timers, belated hours, rest day hours, 4-day weeks etc in line with the agreement. It is clear that London Management want to continue to punish, bully, intimidate and harass our members for daring to stand up to them and defend our terms and conditions. The London Division has therefore unanimously agreed to demand that the national union, when it meets on Tuesday, announce national strike action. This is a national agreement they’re breaking, it’s a national union, therefore it requires national action. |

| Can we Trust Royal Mail? | |||
|
There can be no doubt that from where we started we have achieved significant concessions from Royal Mail as a direct result of the solidarity and strike action taken by our members. We know the key question on everybody’s lips is can we trust Royal Mail to deliver the terms of the agreement given their previous track record. The truth is, at this stage, nobody can predict the complete answer to that question. We don’t trust Royal Mail that’s why we belong to a trade union and that’s why we have forced them to accept that all our national and local ballots remain enacted. The reality is that trust cannot be built overnight. We know there will be managers at all levels seeking to unpick this agreement. We also know that whilst the union does not get everything right, there is something fundamentally flawed with the managerial culture that exists in Royal Mail. It is our firmly held view that exposing this managerial culture to an independent third party under the terms of this agreement is the best way forward. This has been an incredibly difficult time for our representatives and members and you have demonstrated remarkable strength and solidarity. Now, as we enter a new phase, we must continue to work hard to build on that strength because this is the only way to deliver agreements and change that is genuinely in the long term interests of our members. |
