The NSPCC - originally the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children. Sign up for articles, news, email alerts, and lots more at NSPCCinform - "specifically develped to share information with reserachers, trainers & practitioners working to protect children".

NCH Action for Children - aims to improve the lives of Britain's most vulnerable children and young people by providing a diverse and innovative range of services for them and their families and campaigning on their behalf.

Barnardos - the UK charity that works to give children back their future.

The Children's Society - a large UK children's charity with over 90 projects helping to find solutions to the very serious problems they face.

Childline - UK's free national helpline for children & young people in trouble or danger.

Kidscape - a registered UK charity committed to keeping safe from harm or abuse with a focus on preventative policies.

Save the Children Fund - UK charity working to create a better world for children in 70 of the world's most impoverished countries.

The National Association of Children of Alcoholics (US based) - NACOA works on behalf of the children of alcoholics.

The National Children's Bureau. A registered charity which promotes the interests and well-being of children and young people across every aspect of their lives. research, articles, secialist areas, disadvantage.

Children First. An organisation committed to promoting the rights of children, based in Glasgow University. European context.

NICHCY - The National Information Centre for Children & Youth with Disabilities. US-based info for families, educators and professionals.

Home Start - "the leading family support charity in the UK. Home-Start volunteers offer friendship, support and practical help to families with at least one child under five years old."

The Daycare Trust - the national childcare charity, "working for high quality affordable child care for all". A free hotline and all sorts of other info.

The Maternity Alliance - "the organisation which looks beyond birth at all aspects of pregnancy and new parenthood. We believe that babies are our future and work to ensure that all babies have the best possible start in life. And that means supporting pregnant women and parents to be."

Disability Data Link Group - advice and support, and other information.

Disability Cool - all aspects of living with disability.

Disability Net - an excellent resource for those with disabilities, jobs, links, groups, both UK and international.

Values into Action - a UK campaign with people who have learning difficulties.

Mencap - a learning disability charity.

DTour - guides to property and transport suitable for people with disabilities wishing to visit the country of Ireland.

The Royal National Institute for Deaf People.

Age Concern - Age Concern gives practical help and advice, providing local services for older people in the UK. These services can include day centres, lunch clubs, home visits and transport services. Many are funded through contractual agreements with local government. It "believes later life should be fulfilling and enjoyable. Where possible, we enable older people to solve problems themselves, providing as much or as little support as needed."

Care Aware - a site, and a 24-hour helpline, for advice and guidance on care for elderly people.

Speech HTML - software for people with sight problems which turns web pages text into speech so that people can dial up websites by phone. A 1-month free trial version is available.

Suzie Lamplugh Trust - useful information about personal safety and other links that may be of interest.

The Mental Health Foundation.

The Depression Alliance. A British charity offering help to people with depression, run by sufferers themselves. This site contains useful information about different types of depression, medical treatment and self help.

Revolving Doors - a charity concerned with mental health and the criminal justice system. Practical support for people who have 'fallen through the net'.
