Survival International. Survival International is a worldwide organisation supporting tribal peoples. It stands for their right to decide their own future and helps them protect their lives, lands and human rights. Working in close partnership with local indigenous organisations, Survival campaigns for the recognition of the land rights of tribes ranging from the Indians of Amazonia to the Maasai of East Africa, from the Wichí of Argentina to the indigenous tribes of West Papua, from the Innu in eastern Canada to the 'Bushman' peoples of southern Africa.
The Legal Services Commision. The Legal Services Commission is a new executive non-departmental public body created under the Access to Justice Act 1999 to develop and administer two schemes in England and Wales:
1. The Community Legal Service, which replaces the old civil scheme of legal aid, bringing together networks of funders (eg Local Authorities) and suppliers into partnerships to provide the widest possible access to information and advice.
2. The Criminal Defence Service which will from later this year replace the old system of criminal legal aid to provide criminal defence services to people suspected or accused of crimes.
The Human Rights Act. Welcome to the Home Office Human Rights Unit pages. The Human Rights Unit's main responsibility is to ensure the successful implementation of the Human Rights Act 1998, which incorporates into UK law rights and freedoms guaranteed by the European Convention on Human Rights. The Unit also maintains and develops the UK's position under various Human Rights Treaties.
The Immigration & Asylum Act [UK]. I thought I'd put this immediately after the Human Rights Act - for comparison. The Immigration & Asylum Act is said by many to promote, or at least to encourage, racism.
The Council of Europe White Paper on the human rights of people with mental illness, especially those subject to compulsory detention. - contains a draft recommendation No. R (83) 2 concerning the legal protection of persons suffering from mental disorder placed as involuntary patients.
Housing (Scotland) Act 2001 - giving enhanced rights to homeless people amongst a raft of other measures received Royal Assent on July 18, 2001. Other measures in the new legislation create a new Executive agency to oversee the single regulatory framework, support local authorities strategic role, and help promote stronger communities; new commitments on tenant participation and further measures to help tackle anti-social behaviour; and new strategic and funding roles for local authorities to develop an enhanced strategic role in relation to housing in their area. The Scottish Executive has set aside more than £40 million over three years to ensure that local councils can meet their new duties under the new Act.
