Age Concern - Age Concern gives practical help and advice, providing local services for older people in the UK. These services can include day centres, lunch clubs, home visits and transport services. Many are funded through contractual agreements with local government. It "believes later life should be fulfilling and enjoyable. Where possible, we enable older people to solve problems themselves, providing as much or as little support as needed."

Better Government for Older People - part of the UK's Modernising Government Agenda and is steered by a consortium of six partners: Modernising Public Services Group in the Cabinet Office; Age Concern; Anchor Trust; The Carnegie Third Age Programme; Help the Aged; and Warwick University Local Authorities Research Consortium. The Local Government Association are active supporters.

Care Direct - a new service being developed by the Department of Health in partnership with some local councils for people aged 60 years and older and their carers and relatives. Its aim is to make it easier for older people to get information and help when they need it. CAREdirect can help you get in touch with the organisations that provide social care, health, housing and social security benefits.

Speech HTML - software for people with sight problems which turns web pages text into speech so that people can dial up websites by phone. A 1-month free trial version is available.

Disability Rights Commission - fact sheets, news and advice for disabled people plus details on the body's campaigning role. Features legislation and FAQs. The site explains the rights of people with disabilities under the Disability Discrimination Act and The Disability Rights Commission Act 1999 and the role of the DRC in relation to this.

Health and Social Care Act 2001 - controversial plans to abolish Community Health Councils have been scrapped in the new Act given Royal Assent on May 11 2001. The Bill presented to Parliament last December 20 wanted to replace CHC's in England with Patient Advocacy and Liaison Services and patient forums. The new Act will give free nursing care to older people in residential care homes. Care Trusts will integrate the commissioning of health and social services provision - particularly for older people - in a single organisation under the new Act.

Age Equality Commission Bill - to make provision for the establishment of an Age Equality Commission to advise the Government on discrimination issues in relation to older people.

Age & Ageing - an international journal publishing refereed original articles and commissioned reviews on geriatric medicine and gerontology. Its range includes research on ageing and clinical, epidemiological and psychological aspects of later life. Age and Ageing is the journal of The British Geriatrics Society - information about geriatric medicine, gerontology and care of the elderly, with links to related sites.

Ageing and Society - The Journal of The Centre for Policy on Ageing and The British Society of Gerontology. Published six times a year, Ageing and Society is an interdisciplinary and international journal devoted to publishing papers which further the understanding of human ageing.

Elder Web - an award-winning US web site for both professionals and family members looking for information on eldercare and long term care, and includes links to information on legal, financial, medical, and housing issues, as well as policy, research, and statistics.

The British Society of Gerontology - aiming to promote the understanding of ageing and later life through research and communication.

Abbeyfield - national charity providing housing with care to older people.

The Natural Death Centre - to support those caring for the dying at home and their carers, to help them arrange funerals, and to "improve the quality of dying".
