The British Institute of Learning Disability - a UK-based charity that is devoted to 'improving the quality of life for all people with learning disability'.

The Paradigm Consultancy - a UK-based company site, with articles, links, government policies, etc. all to do with learning disability. A bit 'hypy' in my opinion.

Housing Options - 'an independant advice and consultancy service for people with learning disabilities, their relatives, housing and care providers and purchasers'.

The Norah Fry Research Centre - 'one of the leading centres in the UK for research into services for people with learning difficulties. Rigorous research conducted at the centre evaluates services: highlighting good and innovative practice, identifying weaknesses and suggesting areas for development'.

The National Development Team - working for equality, good services and better policy for people with learning disabilities.

The Centre for the Study of Autism - an overview of materials and resources for autism and related syndromes.

The British National Autistic Society - NAS. A registered charity for people with autism, families, professionals, and journalists.

Learning Disability Online.

LearningDisabilities UK. - they say it is "the most comprehensive and popular source of Learning Disability information in the UK, receiving, we believe, more visits than any other similar site." Contains information on conferences, training, job and other advertisements, latest news and publications and hundreds of links to other relevant sites. Linked to Community Living journal. Free software can be downloaded which enables the computer to read the contents of the site aloud to anyone who cannot read, and they are developing a LDUK Accessible site which will be dedicated to accessibility. This site has been designed in partnership with various service user groups who will constantly monitor it to ensure it remains accessible. Additionally, LDUK offers a translation service for organisations that want to display accessible information on the site.

Disability Rights Commission - fact sheets, news and advice for disabled people plus details on the body's campaigning role. Features legislation and FAQs. The site explains the rights of people with disabilities under the Disability Discrimination Act and The Disability Rights Commission Act 1999 and the role of the DRC in relation to this.

Go For It! - BBC's Learning Zone for Special Educational Needs - helps teenagers with severe learning difficulties cope with everyday life and looks at options after school.

NICHCY - The National Information Centre for Children & Youth with Disabilities. Us-based info for families, educators and professionals.

Disability Cool - all aspects of living with disability.

Disability Net - an excellent resource for those with disabilities, jobs, links, groups, both UK and international.

Values into Action - a UK campaign with people who have learning difficulties.

Mencap - a learning disability charity.

DTour - guides to property and transport suitable for people with disabilities wishing to visit the country of Ireland.

Speech HTML - software for people with sight problems which turns web pager text into speech so that people can dial up websites by phone. A 1-month free trial version is available.

PA&D Virtual Lab - The Loughborough University Physical Activity & Disability Virtual Laboratory is maintained by the Physical Activity & Disability Group. The Lab contains learning material developed specifically for modules offered in the undergraduate and post-graduate programmes of the Department of PE, Sports Science and Recreation Management. The main material is only accessible from machines on the campus of Loughborough University but there's still interesting stuff accessible.

Access2go - to give information on access solutions, facilities and equipment that can be used by designers, developers and service providers to enhance indepedence for people with disabilities.

The Cambridge University Advisory Committee on Disability - guidance notes for staff and students.

British Council of Disabled People (UK) - The British Council of Disabled People (BCODP) was set up by disabled people in 1981 to promote full equality and participation within society. It is an umbrella organisation, representing 135 disabled people’s groups at national level. BCODP contributes to a wide range of disability issues, and is committed to the campaign for anti-discrimination legislation. The site provides links to publications and member organisations.

The National Development Team - an independent not for profit development agency that wants new opportunities and inclusion in ordinary life for all people with learning disabilities.

British Deaf Association (UK) - The BDA is a charity representing over 70,000 deaf people in the UK. Its website provides basic information on deafness and issues relating to it, and describes some of the services and projects of the BDA, such as the London Deaf Access Project, which aims to reduce the social exclusion of hearing impaired people.

Centre for Accessible Environments (UK) - The Centre for Accessible Environments is committed to the provision of buildings and places which are accessible to all users, including disabled and older people, and to the enhancement of quality in design.

Centre for Disease Control and Prevention website (US) - The US Centre for Disease Control and Prevention exists to promote health and quality of life by preventing and controlling disease, injury, and disability. Its website has many resources covering the range of health promotion initiatives, projects and information.

Deaf World Web (US) - The Deaf World Web is a multi-purpose deaf-related Website, providing information on a wide range of subjects. It is a deaf-owned, deaf-run service, and a communication network among the deaf on the Internet. The site contains country specific deaf-related information, references and resources, news, networking opportunities and a section for children.

DTLR - Mobility Unit (UK) - The Mobility Unit of the Department for Transport, Local Government and the Regions provides information on actions to improve the accessibility of transport resources for users having impaired mobility.

DfES - Excellence for all Children: Meeting Special Education Needs (UK) - These pages contain a summary of a consultative Green Paper, Excellence for all Children: Meeting Special Education Needs, showing how DfES aims to improve the achievements of children with special educational needs (SEN) in England over the next five years.

DfES – Promoting Disabled People's Rights (UK) - The full text of the White Paper, outlining plans for a new Disability Rights Commission and its proposed role, is available here in PDF format. You will need Adobe Acrobat to download it.

DfES Disability site - this site, provided by the Department of Education and Skills includes a news section and links to information about disability.

DfES Special Education Needs Division (UK) - The Special Educational Needs Division of the Department for Education and Skills is committed to ensuring that special educational needs are given appropriate consideration and recognition in DfES policies, and that best practice is encouraged in all aspects of special educational needs. This website provides information on the work of the division and on Special Education Needs.

Disability Now (UK) - Disability Now is a UK based newspaper for people with an interest in issues surrounding disabilities. The website contains news, features, subscription information and a searchable archive of past issues. The site also includes a large number of links relating to disability issues.

European Network on Independent Living - ENIL - ENIL is the umbrella of individuals and organizations dedicated to promoting independent living among persons with disabilities and the general public in Europe. This site provides background on ENIL’s philosophy, approach and details of events and conferences.

Institute of Independent Living (Sweden) - The Institute of Independent Living aims to promote the opportunities of persons with disabilities to gain more personal and political power, self-determination, full participation and equality, both in Sweden and internationally through educational activities. It works in partnership with other organisations to fulfil its goals. The site includes definitions of independent living and advocacy information as well as links to other related sites.

Royal National Institute for the Blind (UK) - The Royal National Institute for the Blind website describes the causes, effects and treatments of a range of eye conditions, and provides information designed to help those living with an eye condition. The work and products of the institute are also detailed.
And here's the RNIB's Joint Mobility Unit (JMU) - their aim is to bring about improvements in the built environment which would enable blind, deafblind and partially sighted people to move around safely, independently and without undue restriction. The JMU follows the concept of inclusive design and considers the needs of a wide cross-section of society including those with physical, cognitive and sensory impairments and diverse social and cultural needs. The site provides an overview of the concept of inclusive design and applies this to various design issues for buildings, streets, transport and interactive technology.

Grampian Society for the Blind - with a specialist Social Work Team who visit people with poor sight throughout Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire and Moray.

National Disability Council (UK) - The National Disability Council is an independent body with statutory duties to advise the Secretary of State on measures to reduce or eliminate discrimination against disabled people and on the operation of the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA). Their site outlines their work and provides some discussion of the DDA.

Royal Association for Disability and Rehabilitation – RADAR (UK) - RADAR is a national UK organisation run by, and working with, disabled people. The organisation campaigns for equal rights for disabled people, provides information and advice on all issues relating to disability, and promotes good practice and legislation which enables disabled people to live independently. This website contains information about the organisation, news, events, information, FAQs and access to services.

Shaw Trust (UK) - The Shaw Trust is a UK charity which enables people, with all types of disability, to maximise and use their skills, abilities and employment opportunities. It provides rehabilitation, work placements and occupation assistance by working with social service, local authorities and other national and local partners. The website provides an overview of the trust’s work.

Web Accessibility Initiative (US) - The W3C has made a commitment to promoting a high degree of internet usability for people with disabilities. The Web Accessibility Initiative works with organisations around the world and aims to tackle issues of accessibility of the Web through five main areas of work. This page outlines the initiatives with links to guidelines and resources.

Yahoo Disabilities - a links page with all sorts of subjects related to disabilities.

All Walks of Life - a Texas-based organisation "to empower social solutions for people with disabilities. We believe that violence prevention- saving lives and quality of life issues wrap-around each other to form social solutions".
