NOT SPECIFICALLY SOCIAL WORK BUT INTERESTING!:

Prospect Magazine. Prospect is the magazine for the intellectually curious general reader who appreciates finely written essays across the spectrum of political,intellectual and cultural debate. It is the intelligent monthly based in Britain, but with an international mind and an international readership: "more readable than The Economist, more relevant than the Spectator, more romantic than the New Statesman"! (Sir Jeremy Isaacs).

Red Pepper - the independent magazine of the green and radical left. Special online subscription rates available, or read stuff direct on the web.

Antidote - The Campaign for Emotional Literacy. "Emotions are right at the centre of individuals' private lives and the nation's public life. But at present they are there in a way that degrades the political process and political participation. Emotional literacy means being able to recognise what you are feeling so that it doesn't interfere with thinking. It becomes another dimension to draw upon when making decisions or encountering situations. Emotional expression by contrast can mean being driven by emotions so that it isn't possible to think. These two things are often confused because we are still uncomfortable with the idea of the validity of feelings." Susie Orbach, The Guardian, August 12 1998 .

Socialism.org.uk - Online Political Debate, free and easy to use. Join in NOW!

Socialism Today - the monthly journal of the Socialist Party.

The Fabian Society - the UK's premier left-of-centre think tank. Or have a look at The Fabian Global Forum - "developing ideas for a progressive global politics that pursues the the great opportunities of globalisation but simultaneously challenges inequality and injustice."

Achilles Heel - Radical Men's Magazine. A very comprehensive Links & Resources Page on issues of relevance to men.

Foundation for Ethics And Meaning - "The Foundation's activities and research seek to challenge the present economic and cultural dominance of market driven hyper-consumption, and the worship of material wealth, power and celebrity, the political, spiritual and ethical apathy, and the ecological and human damage this worldview produces. Instead we work to encourage a holistic and community spirit of caring that promotes tolerance, justice, and reconciliation. Moving beyond outdated Left/liberal and Right/conservative paradigms..."

The New Humanist magazine - the Journal of the Rationalist Press Association. "The RPA is the leading rationalist organisation in the UK. It emphasises the use of reason for understanding the world. It develops a rationalist perspective on philosophy, religion, science and the arts. Rationalists recognise that reason must be tempered with an appreciation of the importance of emotion in human behaviour." Rationalism and Humanism are not necessarily anti-materialism.

The Muslim Council of Britain - "the largest reperesentative body of British Muslims".

The Noam Chomsky Archive - "the full text to many of Chomsky's major works, the complete audio to several important lectures, and numerous articles, interviews and speeches. ZNet also has its own article archive with over 750 articles from Z plus an extensive forum system where you can discuss issues with Chomsky, Howard Zinn, Barbara Ehrenreich, Michael Albert, and thousands of others. (Noam usually responds within a few days.)"

Liberty - a human rights organization protecting human rights in the UK - "new ideas, reasoned arguments and thought-provoking opinions ..".

DISCUSSION GROUPS & FORUMS::

These are places for groups with a special interest. They are usually moderated by someone but anyone can contribute with questions, answers, opinions, problems, etc.. Messages can be viewed at any time simply by logging into the site.

A main site for discussion forums is Delphi - this contains thousands of forums, all free to join, though you do need to sign up. A search for social work ones came up with 53!

An example is a Forum for black workers called the Triangle Association.

For lists have a look at Liszt.com and look for ones that follow your interest.

Newsgroups: They are separate from the web and are "text-based discussion areas which are usually entirely open - meaning anyone can post up any message, question or comment using a special piece of software called a newsreader". There is a good guide to them by the BBC - click here to read it. In a quick search I found some - click here for the Google search page taking you to various groups. However browsing through them I found very little of any use, and a lot of stuff that was just plain nasty. Mail me if you know anything more about this, particularly if you find a useful one.
