‘Pen’ in Latin means five. Hence we have words like pentagon, meaning five sided. So why does Penultimate mean second to last? Where did the two bit come from?
1) in a race of 6 people the 2nd last person would be 5th hence the pen ( to do with 5). The to bit is in relation to my 2 bit answer, lol.
Why are there 5 different pronunciations of the letters ‘ough’ in the English language?
2) Ough, now let me think about that one, ooooooouuuuuugggggggghhhhhhhh because we are fastidious awkward sods.
