PIERROT
is situated near the village of Pardaillan (the childhood home of
author Marguerite Duras) in the heart of the Guyenne, the ancient
name for a region, which now comprises parts of the departments
of Gironde, Dordogne, and Lot et Garonne. We are also in the Cotes
de Duras AOC wine producing area and near the historic market town
of Duras with its imposing mediaeval chateau.
THE
PROPERTY, set in 15 acres of parkland, woodland and pasture,
is built round a courtyard, some of the buildings dating back to
the 14th century but one local history puts the origins as Gallo-Roman,
the name Pierrot being a corruption of Pierre Haut - probably a
stone table or alter. The property is reputed to have been fortified
against brigands in the 15th century. Pierrot looks across a fertile
valley to the ruined 10th century chateau de Pardaillan of which
only one tower and the perimeter walls remain standing.
ACCOMMODATION
IN PIERROT COTTAGE: The stone built cottage forms part of one
side of the courtyard and has been sympathetically restored to a
comfortable standard. The kitchen has a traditional open fireplace,
exposed beams and tiled floor and is equipped with gas cooker, fridge/freezer,
microwave oven and dishwasher. Use of the washing machine is available
in a separate building. Also included are: electric kettle, coffee
maker, toaster, iron and ironing board.
The
attractive and spacious living room has a stone
fireplace, satellite television (BBC channels) and video and a cupboard
full of games, toys and children's books. There is plenty of reading
matter
for adults too!
There
are three bedrooms, one with a double bed and hand washbasin, the
other two, each with two single beds. Electric fans are provided
in the bedrooms for hot weather.
There
are two bathrooms, one with WC and shower and the other with WC
and bath, constant hot water being provided by a boiler, which also
serves the kitchen.
A
cot and highchair are available on request.
THE
12.5m SWIMMING POOL OF THE COURTYARD COTTAGE (occasionally used
by us) is fenced to keep small children safe, has a shallow end
of 60cm and deep end of 2m.
You
can play badminton, boules or table tennis on the covered terrace.
Locally there are tennis courts, canoeing, and a pony club. The
Lac de Castelgaillard (5km) is a large and attractive lake with
a sandy beach, a supervised swimming area for children and a large
water slide. FISHING is also available at the lake from April
to November. Within about 20 - 40 minutes drive there are two 9
hole and three 18 hole GOLF COURSES. CYCLING is very
popular as the countryside is ideal - quiet country lanes and rolling,
picturesque country. There are several shops locally where you can
hire bicycles.
COLOMBINE
COTTAGE:We have renovated our old prune-oven barn (we're
not sure exactly how old it is, but it features on the Plan Napoleon
which makes it at least 160 years old) into a new cottage. The cottage
is newly equipped and furnished and sleeps up to 8 in three bedrooms
- one double (160x200), one twin (2 beds 90x200) and one room with
2 beds (90x200) and 2 chairs that pull out into single beds (80x190).
There is one bathroom with bath, open shower, washbasin and WC;
a separate WC with hand washbasin; and a shower room with washbasin
and shower. The cottage is all on one level, so no stairs to negotiate,
and is wheelchair accessible. It has its own large garden and
swimming pool and is completely independent of our other cottage,
being approximately 50 metres apart.
For
those seeking winter accommodation or a long let, the cottage is
double glazed and well insulated with central heating.
Where
possible we have retained the old stone walls and character of the
original building, which was open on two sides, except for one room
which is now the sitting room. The dining room retains the openness
of the original by having two large sliding windows all along one
side, giving the room a light airy feel. The horseshoe shaped kitchen
fits snugly into the old prune drying area.
