Day 7 Saturday 10 July Preston - Carlisle

After image a good breakfast, I was able to get on the go early, and soon saw this milestone on the way into Garstang. It was heartening to see that somebody had put some effort into doing something well. A strange thing to note about milestones is that usually they tell you the distance TO somewhere. But I'd noticed that back in Cornwall, they gave distances FROM wherever. Why?

One image of my recurring gripes during the trip was the woeful inadequacy of signposts directing cyclists. Lancaster was no exception, and so I missed going over this elegant cycle/pedestrian bridge over the River Lune. I was stuck on the road with all the traffic instead.

image After Kendal, the long climb to Shap Fell begins. It was a steady slog for a good few miles, with the beautiful hills of the Lake District to the left and the North York Moors to the right.

image I got to the top without having to get off and push, which made me feel rather pleased with myself. From then on, my ankle started paying me back.

image I think these are probably some sort of wild geranium growing in the verge, on the road from Shap down to Penrith.

Somewhere around Penrith I reached the half-way mark!!
