VR - Games

Probably the most recent area of 3D graphics I have pursued is the area of Virtual Reality (first using Virtual Reality Modelling Language - VRML) and designing and making game levels using game engines, such as 'Unreal Tournaments' Game editor 'Unreal Ed 2.0'.

Below are two examples of maps made with Unreal Ed 2.0. The first is a project of 'Blaises' Night Club (Deathmatch and VR walkaround maps). The second is my last VR project: the 'Cleveland shopping centre'. This time I made game levels for both Deathmatch and Capture the Flag formats, as well as a VR walkaround version.

Previously I mentioned I had made VR worlds using code (VRML) in a text editor. They were made around the same time as each other, that being March - May 2001. One is a 3D pacman game created using VRML that myself and a friend made on our final year of our degree's for a joint assignment.

The other was for a solo assignment, where I created in VRML a website bookshop for the author 'Richard Laymon'. The idea being you wander around a haunted house, opening the cabinets on the walls and reading the books synopsis (HTML page pop up), and if you wished, you could order the books via a HTML order forms. Each room in the house took you to a certain type of horror novel, as Laymon's work could be pigeon holed into various sectons. This was a prototype site made for a VR module on my final degree year.

Download Information

You can download these VRML worlds from the download's section. Infact you can download any of these four projects from there. Each project has been zipped up using winzip (click here to download winzip for free).

The Game level maps need the game 'Unreal Tournament' to play/interact with them. The VRML worlds also need the 'cosmo player' plugin for your web browser to view them. You can download this free by clicking here

All downloads have information text files in them, so you can set them up following the simple step by step guides I have made. Please scroll down to see screenshots from the Blaises and Mall-ratz Unreal Tournament maps, as well as information on each piece.

MA Creative Multimedia - March 2002 -

Using Unreal Ed 2.0 (Unreal Tournament's game engine) I have re-created a night club that was local to me that I had been going to for a number of years (It closed in June 2002). Anyone from around the Middlesbrough area might recognise this place as 'Blaises Underground'.

The images below are snapshots of Blaises in development, these maps were completed in 2002 and can be downloaded from the 'downloads' section of this site. The two versions include:

1: A Deathmatch version where you can run around shooting computer controlled characters.

2: A Virtual walk-through of the place where you can wander around at your own leisure.

Final MA Multimedia Project - Mall-ratz - aka Cleveland Centre - August 2002 -

The screenshots below are in progress screen captures (21st - 30th June 2002) of my Cleveland centre map, which for my version is now called 'Mall-ratz'. The map was completed a couple of months later after I took a break to work on my report. The three versions I made and that are available for you to download are a 'Death-match' 'Capture The Flag' and a 'VR walkaround'.

Together with a detailed dissertation about computer games; looking back to their past and how they are to develop for the future. As well as various other topics associated with games and virtual reality, it all added up to make my final project for University.
