It is said that the Emperor Meiji of Japan, Mutsuhito, and his wife, the Empress Shoken, wrote more than 100,000 waka poems and Mikao Usui is said to have chosen 125 of these for use in meditation and the teaching of moral and spiritual values to his students.
Unlike the 3 line haiku, waka is a 5 line, non-rhyming poem (waka is Japanese for song - hence they were often sung at Reiki meetings!).
The syllable structure for waka is 5-7-5-7-7 (31 syllables altogether).
The idea is to provide a snapshot of form, images, feelings and mood in a single statement.
I thought it would be a good idea to write some of my own waka poetry, with the emphasis on the practice of Reiki. I hope you like them!
NOTE: All of these waka are (c)2007-8 Colin Powell. Please ask me if you would like to use any of them.
