Justine Cornforth

I am 31 and a second year OU student. I studied E123 (Working with children in the early years) and U212 (Childhood) last year and am about to embark this year on ED209 (Child Development) and E124 (Supporting children's learning in the early years) . These courses are relevant to my work as a children's nanny. I care for a 3 year old and a new baby in Cobham. I enjoy travelling and my work takes me all over the world.

My main hobby is genealogy and family history with a special interest in areas of North Yorkshire but I have lived in and around Surrey for the last 12 years so know the area well. I am looking forward to this year and helping to regenerate the Guildford Branch.

I moved to Guildford in '97, studying at the University of Surrey for 3 years to gain a degree in Music and during this time I worked in student radio, chaired the Students' Union Entertainments Committee and sat on the Students' Union Executive. I worked at Surrey University as vice-president of the Students' Union during 2000-2001, hence my continued interest in supporting learners and getting out and having fun! My interests are wide-ranging, from music to computers and web design, speaking a bit of French to reading loads of novels and playing piano.

I've been studying with the OU since Spring 2003 and have just finished my second course, TT280 'Web Basics: Design, Development and Management'. Before that I studied T171 which is a first year undergraduate technology module on the history of computing, the internet and e-commerce models. Rather scarily, I've signed up for E845 to start in February 2004, which is a postgraduate course in supporting lifelong learning - one of three courses I need to complete in order to get a masters degree in education, which is my end goal for now, but will probably take until 2007 at this rate!

As far as work goes, I am the Community Learning Advisor for Guildford and Waverley, employed by Surrey Lifelong Learning Partnership, working on projects to reduce barriers to learning, improve basic skills and capture the voices of real learners in the area to improve local services for them. Before this, I worked at a charity called Surrey Community Action where I was project manager and assistant trainer for a UK Online computer project called Tech-IT-up. This project involved taking laptop computers to community venues to offer non-threatening basic computer days and internet and email tuition to the general public for free.

I hope I can use my experience of learning with the OU, together with my experience of working to support learners, along with my love of beer, pubs and socialising to their full capacity this year to make sure Guildford OUSA students have a laugh and get the most out of their learning too.

Me

I am 29 and a first year Open University Student. I am currently studying S103 (Discovering Science) and hope to go on to do a degree in Natural Sciences.

I did a BSc (Hons) Computer Science degree at Stafford University, where I was in charge of one of the student clubs, Cult Tv.

After uni I came down here to live in Guildford. I work in Woking as a computer programmer but have done a spot of web development, which is why I am in charge of creating the Guildford OUSA web site.

My interests include reading; mostly science books but also novels. I am also interested in ancient history, nature and of course computers.
