Christine
Collister
Possibly the best
female voice in music today. It's impossible to define her: from jazz
to folk to rock, she is one of the most innovative interpreters of
songs ever. I am on record as saying that I'd marry her just so she
could sing to be every day - I should be so lucky!

Carol
Laula
Brilliant
Paisley-based singer-songwriter. Her songs are heart
breaking, ballsy, cool, witty and catchy. Live, she's
barnstorming, especially when she's with her great band,
including phenomenal guitarist Johnny Cameron.

Paul
Simon
My
favourite ever musician, and his 1990 SECC concert was the
best live event I've ever been to. While my pals were into
Status Quo, Roxy Music and Queen, I had absolutely no
credibility whatsoever because I was a Simon and Garfunkel
fan. Still am.

Ani
diFranco
Wonderful
American musician and activist. Mesmerising solo on stage,
her guitar sounds like a twelve piece band. Great, great,
great!

Hamell
on Trial
Mad
raw punk anti-folk funny Brooklyn-born nutter. His "I Hate
Your Kid" should be the anthem of all step-parents,
especially those with psychotic tendencies. Like
me.

Eliza
Gilkyson
Daughter of
Terry Gilkyson (songwriter who penned "The Bare Necessities"
for Baloo!), Gilkyson is touching, sensitive, bluesy and
provocative. Gaining in popularity in Scotland, she's often
over for the Celtic Connections festival. Go
see!

Ezio
Cambridge-based
duo of singer-songwriter Ezio Lunedi and guitarist Booga
(one of the best guitarists I've ever seen live). Their
songs capture brilliantly what it is to yearn. Super cool!

|

Tindersticks
Incredibly
sexy sounds from deep-voiced Stuart Staples and a great,
idiosyncratic band, including excellent Dickson Hinchcliffe
on violin and vocals. The
unofficial
site
is probably better than the official site linked on the
right.

Eve
Selis and Cindy Alexander
Two
gorgeous, talented New Country artists whose recordings are
unavailable in the UK. However, you'll find a lot of
downloadable stuff at their websites.

Astrid
Williamson
Superb
Shetland-born singer-songwriter, ex of Goya Dress. Fabulous lyrics,
great tunes and cutting edge production, each of her three albums is very
different and very, very good. Tremendous live and a really lovely
person,
too!

|
Boo
Hewerdine
Terrific
songwriter, possibly best known for fronting the great "The
Bible" and his collaborations with Eddi Reader ("The
Patience of Angels"?). Fabulous lyrics - who else could
write a song called "Slow Learner" - and great live, either
solo or with a band.

The Blue
Nile
Typically
minimalist and couldn't-give-a-toss site from the Howard
Hughes' of rock. Still, doesn't take away from the fact that
they are just genius, every one of their four albums in the
last 20 years being damned near perfect. Their latest,
"High", contains possibly the best love song ever, "Soul
Boy" - listen and be breathless! Sorry, the site
doesn't seem to be operating at the moment - I'll revise it a.s.a.p.
