Home Cinema Build

The Build

The design of the build was twofold. It had to be reasonably sound proof and thermally well insulated so that it wouldn't cost a fortune to heat in the winter. It is detached and will be connected to the house by a porch.

An additional wall was constructed in front of the aluminium garage doors. This was made out of dense blocks to help reduce the sound transmission both in and out. The rear window was replaced by a double glazed unit and a solid hardwood door was installed instead of the old ply and glass one. Celotex insulation was used in the floor (50mm) and walls (90mm) and a double skin of plasterboard used on the ceiling.

what shall I do with these garage doors? wall them up! new insulated concrete floor
the floor's complete starting the studwork wastepipes?... no! they're wiring conduits
some more studwork insulating with celotex up goes the plasterboard
on with the plastering drying out time first test and sizing the screen
add some uplighters... downlighters and a bit of ceiling paint a 'picture' frame and more painting
component and composite video leads go in here... ...and come out there frame correct size? not bad!

The last part of the build was to link the new Home Cinema with the rest of the house. This would mean that it would be nicer during the winter months, helping to keep in both sound and heat as well as the weather out. It will also make the room more secure.

As you can see the main structure is finished, the double glazed units have been fitted and the roof is now complete and fully water tight (for 25years so they say!). Both the front and back doors have been hung and painted and the next step is to paint the facia boards to match existing (prior to the arrival of the guttering) and then stain the window frames. Almost complete now. guttering is on and first coat of paint on the window frames. Waiting for warmer weather to finish off the outside but work continues inside. Tiles have been laid and grouted and skirting boards fitted. Ceiling to be skimmed and painted this weekend.

Here's a tip though: Try and keep external builds to the summer. A wet November isn't great - the mud and mess is horrendous.

The Finished Home Cinema

This is the finished AV room (as it's now known) I'm trying to stop saying "I'm off into the Garage". There will be some more tweaking but it's up and running and in use most days.

Here are some images taken of the projected picture. Please note these have been cropped from the original photos but are still in the order of half a megabyte in size.
