Unnecessary Tragedy
These
two young badger sows were knocked down together and killed during the
night or the early hours of Sunday 16th August 2009. The
accident occured on the London Road between Sawbridgeworth and Bishop's
Stortford.
The initial impact probably happened as they crossed the road,
together, to forage for food. The bloodstains on the road suggest that
they were struck at the same time and, judging by the distance between
them, it appears that they were hit at high speed.
Derek
Barry, who
was called to deal with this tragedy said "I just cannot, for the life
of me, understand why motorists don't see these animals along the edge
of the road. It's ironic that there is a SLOW sign, on the road, just a
few yards from where they were hit!!! Someone picked up these dead
badgers then placed them on the grass verge. You would be surprised
that drivers continually drive over dead animals on our roads".
Dealing
with
problems, such as this, is part of the remit of the various badger
groups and help with not only the tragedies, but also the positive and
constructive work, is always needed.
