"It is a female nemorum - also showing white margins to the tergites as found in cryptarum, but with a very different leg colour. Good timing."

Syrphus
spp. (ribesii,
unconfirmed)
English: A Hover fly
|
Recorded: 11 April 2004
Where: garden
Notes: 'cannot be identified to species. This has always been a
tricky genus requiring considerable care, but the addition of S.
rectus has made it difficult to impossible (in the case of separating
male S. vitripennis and S. rectus)! So you will usually need a specimen
under good magnification and lighting to get this genus to species! (Stuart Ball) |

"Hoverflies with aphidophagous larvae can show quite some variation in size. When 'mummy' deposited an egg near a rather poor aphid colony, then 'junior' would have had little to eat and consequently be smaller than a sibling whose egg was deposited near a nice and large aphid colony."-Paul Beuk on Uk-Hoverflies
