At the time of his marriage James was a copse cutter, as was his father George. He and his wife Caroline (Carrie) lived in Singleton when their first child was born. They then moved back to his home village of West Dean. In the 1881 census James profession was a gardener; possibly working on the West Dean Estate. At this time he was aged 28 with 2 childen. Later in the 1891 census his profession was general labourer.
They had 27 children, three sets of twins and one set of triplets.
Seven of their children died two sons in the 1st World War and five during infancy.
James and Caroline lived to celebrate their diamond wedding anniversary at their home in West Dean in 1936.

Her father was employed on the West Dean Estate, as many of her family were.
She worked in service at West Dean House at the time the James family owned the estate.
She married Alfred Gatrell at West Dean Church and moved around the farming communities following his trade of carter.
They had seven children.

Kath was born and brought up a country girl.
Her father was a carter working on farms in and around Sussex and Surrey and she grew up amongst country people working on the land.
School life was difficult; the family moved frequently, following her fathers trade. She attended eleven schools before she left school at the age of fourteen and attributed this to her lack of scholarly skills.
When she left school she went into service. During this time she was a member of the Petworth House household for a few months.
Five years later she met and married Arthur Oakley in Hambledon, Surrey in 1927.
They lived in Portslade, Lancing and Shoreham and had seven children.

As a young man Charlie worked as a gardener for the council and lived with his sister Kathleen at a bungalow in Lancing. He worked in the park close to Lancing Manor.
He then became a commercial motor lorry driver and lodged at 17 Vale Road, Portslade, Sussex until his marriage to Joyce Langrish.
Joyce was a laundry assistant working at the Star Laundry, Portslade and lived at 55 Church Road, Portslade, Sussex.
Joyce and son Roger were killed while Charlie was away on national service. They were killed when a bomb fell on their home in Richardson Road Portslade.
He remarried and he and his second wife Ivy and had 3 children.
He died in Worthing hospital shortly before celebrating sixty years marriage.
He was cremated 19th February 2003 at Worthing crematorium, the last of his generation.

Charles served in the RAF during the war years.
He married Marjorie and had 2 children.
With his wife he founded the Chichester District Association for the Elderly in 1953. After much fundraising and help from local people the association's permanent base the Newell Centre, St Pancras, Chichester was built and opened after meetings were previously held at various locations around the city.
He was Mayor of Chichester from 1957 to 1959 and became an Honorary Freeman of Chichester on his 50th birthday in 1971. He was a well liked JP for 27 years.
At his retirement and as a tribute the magistrates' clerk said "Mr Newell is a man of decision, able to balance the various needs of compassion and hold authority in the court. We in the profession are sad because we lose a character, and characters are few and far between these days".
