The seaside town of Arromanches is a delightful place to visit, totally different now from how it was on D-Day, I know that sounds obvious but back in the pre-war days it was only a little town of no significance, but history has changed all that! it is now very significant.
This is the town where the British Forces landed on D-Day! the very heart of Gold Beach, the home of the "Mulberry Harbour" a fantastic feat of civil engineering, more of which I will be relating to in future pages on this web site.
The town now obviously thrives on the history of D-Day, nearly every shop, café, restaurant and hotel, totally geared for the D-Day tourist.
A fabulous museum is the focal point on the sea front, there are tanks and artillery pieces on display all over the town, the quaint main street has a lovely warm atmosphere with pavement cafés emitting the aromas of their cuisine and the sounds of the ongoing entertainment.

Gold Beach at Arromanches, when you walk on the beach now it is hard to imagine what it must have been like on D-Day,
The hotel seen on the left of the picture is where we stayed whilst at Gold Beach, with a sea view it was an experience to look at the whole area and let your mind try to take you back to that historical time.
There are remnants of the Mulberry Dock still in the bay at Arromanches, with one large section on the beach, enabling the visitor to walk to it and witness the scale of the construction.

The main street at Arromanches is full of atmosphere, D-Day souvenirs on sale everywhere, most of the cafés have photographs of the Normandy Veterans Reunions, which take place annually here.
The "Normandy Veterans Association" are obviously very highly thought of in this town and the welcome they receive can be imagined.

A fabulous D-Day museum is the focal point on the sea front at Arromanches. Newly built it houses some very interesting artefacts of the Normandy Landings and tells the story of the Mulberry Harbour.
Overlooking the bay on the hillside is the 360° D-Day cinema,
