My Recommended Videos

I realise there are literally hundreds of videos about the subject of D-Day  but the following list is what I have seen personally and think they give a good overall picture of the event.

THE LONGEST DAY.

This was the first film I saw about D-Day
way back in the '60's.
A very descriptive film with some of the worlds greatest actors.
Filmed in black and white for authenticity it really captures the  subject brilliantly.
A must for all D-Day historians, some of the events may not be perfectly portrayed, but I would say 90% are.
The German perspective is also shown in great detail.

SAVING PRIVATE RYAN

A Masterpiece by Steven Spielberg. If you have seen this film you already know how great it is. If you haven't why not?
Not for the fainthearted, the Omaha Beach scenes make you realise the true horror of war. Excellently acted by Tom Hanks, Edward Burns, Matt Damon and Tom Sizemore.
After watching this film it is at least 3 days before I begin to feel O.K.
I know of one man actually suffering from shock after seeing the film.
Even so it is a film that has got to be seen and a video that should be in your personal collection.

YANKS

Although not exactly a film about D-Day I think it is a very interesting story about what it was like for the American soldiers who were shipped over to England to form the build up for the D-Day landings.
Starring Richard Gere and Vanessa Redgrave the film is sometimes amusing but also portrays the serious side to the event. William Devane is superb in his role. A lot of it was filmed in my home town of Stockport and I can remember the convoys of army vehicles driving around the town during the making of it.
