Holme Valley Team - funding and fundraising

Supermarket collection
Fundraising through supermarket collections
Mountain Rescue in this country is free of charge to all. Mountain Rescue Teams, including Holme Valley, are not recognised as statutory emergency Services. Therefore the Holme Valley Mountain Rescue Team (as with all other civilian Mountain Rescue Teams) relies completely on voluntary contributions from the public and discretionary grants to fund outgoings. The Team receives no automatic Government or Local Authority funding. For this reason the Holme Valley Team has Registered Charitable status (Charity No. 1015532) and is a Company Limited by Guarantee (No 2764292).

Also of note each Member of the Holme Valley Team is an unpaid volunteer, receiving no expenses and giving their time for training and rescues free of charge. They also provide their own personal equipment, often at considerable cost.

Fundraising - why and how we do this

Replacing equipment and servicing, repairs, fuel, insurance, administration etc. all costs money. The following are typical annual costs for key items.
  • Insurance Policy for the Holme Valley Team £618.45
  • Headquarters' annual rent £1,175
  • Cylinder rental (Medical gases) £260.40
  • Team vehicle insurance £1,800.00
  • Fuel for vehicles £204.67
  • Ongoing medical equipment/materials costs £707.00.
This is over £3660.00 before we buy any new equipment. The true annual running costs for the average year are in the order of £6000. This price continues to rise year on year.

The money required to keep the Team running is raised through our own fundraising events, street collections and by assisting at many community events. All achieved through the hard work of the Team members, their families and friends. Capital costs are met by discretionary grant applications.

Fundraising News

Forest Farm Barbecue & Barn Dance 2008

This is our annual major fundraising and fun event. This year it will be held on Saturday 5th July. As usual, it was at Forest Farm, Mount Road, Marsden. Music was provided by the host's band - The Fusspots supported by guest performers to dance to.

Previous years have experienced wet and windy weather through to fine, dry, warm evenings. Whatever the weather the event will be provided with adequate cover and a fantastic evening of entertainment. It will be a great evening with a mix of great food, great music and a great night out which a quality raffle. The highlight of previous events has been a dance and music display by the Zulus.

The event raises over a £1000 for the Holme Valley Team funds. Tickets are available through the Holme Valley Team by the 'contact us' link.

Other donations and assistance

The Yorkshire Avalance Dodgers have sent a cheque on for £200 following their recent pantomime performance in Marsden.

PC World in Huddersfield have assited with a substancial discount on a laptop computer and printer. This will be used to develop the GPS and digital mapping capability to assist in the search process on Team call-outs.

The Holme Valley Team would like to thank the Colne Valley Lions who back in Feb 2005 confirmed that they would fund the purchase of a new Bell Tangent Stretcher. This is a stainless steel stretcher that will replace one of our older stretchers that is nearing the end of its serviceable life.
The money donated by the Colne Valley Lions together with a subsidy grant from the Mountain Rescue Council met the £2000.00 cost of this stretcher.
