The Holme Valley Mountain Rescue Team is proud of its links with the local community and makes every effort to assist wherever possible. All year round we are asked to support many local events by providing First Aid and Rescue cover. Without the Team providing this service many of the events, often fundraising events for other charities, they would not be able to go ahead.

Particularly in the summer months the Holme Valley Team is available to assist with events such as the Huddersfield Examiner's annual charity challenge, the Holme Moss Fell Race, the Holme Valley Scouts' Mountain Bike Race and Wakefield Hospice's Sponsored Walk. The Holme Valley Team also assist the National Trust in the area with their own events such as heather spreading, which helps to maintain good working relationships as we access their land for our vital training.

The Holme Valley Team has many standing commitments to planned events, these include the Holme Valley Scouts' mountain bike challenge and the Wakefield Hospice's sponsored walk also the Holme Moss Fell race. There are several shows and galas the Team also attend on an annual basis where we are able to promote safety on the hills and enable people to see our work.

Supporting young people in the community
Moreover, many active Team Members assist in providing support with local youth groups. There are several Scout and Cub Leaders active in the Holme Valley Team and there are a number of Members who work with the Duke of Edinburgh's Award providing training for expeditions as well as running Service courses to raise awareness about Mountain Rescue.

All this ensures that the young people that participate in these activities are well supervised, safe and enjoy taking part. Some of these young people often develop their hillcraft skills and go on to join the Holme Valley Team or join for a short time for their community service sections.

Active Team Members are also often asked to do talks and presentations on our work and training to a very wide range of community groups. All this goes towards helping to spread the message that we are there and how we may play a part in people's lives in the local area. This is all based on the firm belief that prevention is better than cure.

Read about a new exciting course for the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme
(reported in the Huddersfield Examiner website). This course has run for several years not and has helped raise awareness of Mountain Rescue and the Holme Valley Team to many Award participants. Some have become Team Members!
