Talk by Ken
Rinaldo 7.30 pm at the Lighthouse Media Centre, Brighton followed by
work in progress by Andy Webster at Sumo Bar, Brighton.
Ken
Rinaldo is an internationally recognised artist who
creates interactive installations, often inspired by biology
and artificial life. He gave an overview of his work in
a talk entitled Technology Recapitulates Phylogeny.
Here is the abstract:
Ken Rinaldo
will trace the development of his artwork discussing early
experiences in marine biology, computer science and conceptual
art. His talk will be focused on a central idea underlying his
artworks: the hypothesis that Technology recapitulates Phylogeny.
In this process technological systems learn and recap the evolved
wisdom of living systems. Rinaldo will show artificial life and
interactive artworks illustrating the idea that biology and technology
are inevitably symbiotic, and part of a larger law of living systems.
Living systems, through adaptive behaviour and evolution,
naturally seek symbiotic relationships with their environment;
our evolving machines, through mimesis and co-evolution, will
continue to imbed themselves deeper into our sensorium.
After
the talk there were two works in progress by Andy
Webster downstairs in the Sumo bar: A005Y
to Watermelon a high speed colour swatch work; and Strangers
in the Night, a video of a generative drumming performance
that was commissioned for the opening of Air
Guitar: Art reconsidering Rock Music at Angel Row Gallery,
Nottingham, made in collaboration with Jon
Bird.
