Blip 39

Monday 23 October - Saturday 4 November 2006    free

a series of events, organised by Blip in association with Lighthouse, that explored how artists are reconfiguring technology.

Exhibition of Paul Granjon's Sexed Robots and films of Fluffy Tamagotchi, Furman and Chicken Feet.

After their successful showing at the Venice Biennale, the male and female robots roamed around an arena in the new Lighthouse building, just down from Wagamama (Argus Lofts, 26 Kensington Street, Brighton BN1 4AJ). Most of the time they avoid each other (and the walls) but when they come into heat they seek each other out and try to mate.

Watch a movie of the Sexed Robots.

The free exhibition was open Monday - Saturday 12pm - 6pm, 23 October - 4 November. Lighthouse, Argus Lofts.

Pyrophonic! An evening of live performance by musicians and visual artists commissioned by Lighthouse and Blip: Icarus, Tom Arthurs, Maurizio Ravalico, Lothar Ohlmeier, Squint, Brittski and Paul Granjon.

This event fused the surreal wit of artist Paul Granjon with a series of collaborative electronic, acoustic and visual improvisations from the 'Not Applicable Artists' and film artists Squint and Brittski.

The first spark was struck by Paul Granjon who successfully demonstrated primitive fire-making technology and then sang a couple of songs with his home-made machines. The Not Applicable Artists then got the fire roaring with a series of live electronic/acoustic and visual improvisations. This new collaboration saw Ollie Bown and Ismbard Khroustaliov (aka Icarus) join forces with F-IRE collective artists Tom Arthurs (trumpet), Maurizio Ravalico (percussion) and Lothar Ohlmeier (bass clarinet). Visual fuel is added to the final mix by film artists Squint and Brittski with their unique blend of 16mm footage, looped video and slides.

Friday 3 Novemember, The Old Market, Upper Market Street, Hove BN3 1AS.
Performance started at 8pm (doors opened one hour before).

Tickets were £7 and could be bought online from WeGotTickets or from Resident (01273 606 312), Rounder Records (01273 325 440) or direct from the Old Market (01273 736 222).

Circuit bending workshop by Lektrolab

Partipants learned how to customise old tech-toys and turn them into electronic instruments. Equipment and materials were provided and people could take home whatever they reconfigured. No prior experience of electronics or soldering was required. The cost was £10.

1pm - 4pm Saturday 28 October. Lighthouse, Argus Lofts.

These three events were organized in association with Lighthouse and were part of the Brighton Digital Festival 2006.
