Jem Finer

Talk by Jem Finer 7.30 pm at the Nightingale Theatre, Brighton followed by work in progress by CiCi Blumstein, Chris Hornzee-Jones and Paddy Kernohan at Grand Central, Brighton.

Jem Finer, artist and musician (co-founder of the Pogues) working in a diverse range of fields, including music, film and performance. He places a strong emphasis on collaborative practice and at the time of his presentation was artist in residence at the Department of Astrophysics, University of Oxford. His record label, el rino, has just released its first two cds - gtr by Jem Finer and Visionary Landscapes by Jem Finer and Andrew Kotting. In his talk he presented an overview of his many and varied projects.

Jem showed films relating to several of his projects including: Longplayer, a 1000 year long composition playing since 1st January 2000 at Trinity Buoy Wharf Lighthouse, Orchard Place, London; pinball a collaboration with Franko B and Dominic Robson using modified pinball machines; wig (contingency plan for baldness); o is for rocket, h is for shark, a sound piece for the number 8 tram in Helsinki; and work in zero gravity.

After Jem's talk there were three works in progress downstairs in the bar at Grand Central. CiCi Blumstein showed her film Makeshift Body: Cytomotion, an analogue-digital hybrid. In the near future, the film will consume itself through a simple interactive process. Christopher Hornzee-Jones installed Eye Contact, a film of one of his eyes, in the bay window of the bar so that it was visible both inside and outside. Paddy Kernohan projected his film Boundary/Agency in an alcove in the bar.
