Sir Patrick Moore
As a child,
I loved watching the stars but it didn't occur to me that,
if looked at through a telescope,
they would look anything other than the same twinkling lights, only bigger.
When I was old enough,
and was allowed to stay up late,
I watched a programme that opened my eyes and my thirst for knowledge.
The programme was "The Sky At Night" with Patrick Moore,
broadcast every month since April 1957.
Through Patrick, I learned that the Moon was a ball and not flat,
that the Stars were really Suns.
He introduced me to Galaxies, Quasars, Comets, Nebulae and Planets.
He has taken me and the rest of the
UK viewing public all around the world to witness Solar and Lunar eclipses,
passing Comets, Meteor showers
and was with us during
all of the Apollo missions and the Moon Landing.
Now, 45 years later, he is still devoted to his subject,
and still broadcasts his programme, taking us now through
the Mars missions, and still keeping us excited about every new discovery.
Never having missed a
single episode, he is now in the Guinness book of records as the
longest running presenter of a TV show
in the World.
He is acclaimed as an expert in his field, and the UK's foremost authority on Astronomy.
In 2001 he was deservedly
Knighted by the Queen.
Without Sir Patrick Moore, the UK public would have had little or no interest
or understanding of Space and our Solar
System at work.
For his dedication, enthusiasm, expertise and wealth of knowledge,
I for one would like to thank Sir Patrick Moore,
and may he continue to encourage the next generation to look to the Stars
