A NATURAL STATE
Lately it seems that everyone I speak to
is concerned with the increased ferocity of natural
occurrences
e.g. the weather, earthquakes, tornadoes, hurricanes, volcanic activity
and the latest concern is meteorites and asteroids.
I do sometimes wonder though if all of the concern is justified.
There is no doubt in my mind that Global Warming is causing some change in the Earth's atmosphere,
but I believe that with the proper care and attention
this damage can be halted if not repaired completely,
although probably not in my lifetime.
There are of course other issues that either
directly or indirectly WILL affect nature in some way,
namely GM production, Toxic dumping
and other totally inexcusable crimes against nature,
but with continued teaching and awareness, these things too can be overcome.
My statement of wonder is more directed to,
What has always been and Will always be.
Nature has always been ferocious and always will be.
There have always been earthquakes, tornadoes, hurricanes,
volcanic activity, meteorites and asteroids.
The difference today is the media,
public awareness and because the population of the Earth
grows so much every year,
more people are affected by these events.
The weather in all it's glory does fascinate me,
I love watching the clouds, rain, snow, rainbows and sleet.
Thunder, lightning or any extreme form of weather does excite
and does at times scare the living daylights out of me,
but I do tire of the constant suggestions
that the latest weather extreme is new, and hasn't happened before
(or at least since records began!)
I suppose that treating weather, in whatever form it takes,
as normal, will not sell newspapers.
In 1903 my great-gran would never have heard of a flood in Russia
or learned about an asteroid in a near-miss with Earth
and it's very possible that she couldn't have cared less to know about these
occurrences.
One hundred years ago she would have been too busy worrying about,
feeding her husband and children, keeping them warm with a roof over their heads,
and worrying about what the neighbours were thinking about
her newly whitewashed step outside her front door.
Modern life has brought about very different values and with it their very different worries.
Maybe we just have too much time on our hands today.
Part of the Human condition seems to be 'blame anything but yourself'
and the modern victim for this tenet is Mother Nature.
Nature has through the ages managed to set things right
in Her own inimitable way without any help from us.
It's US and our impact on nature that we should be worrying about,
after all, nature will survive,
it's exceedingly probable that WE won't and WE will be entirely to blame!
