EDINBURGH

Visitors to Scotland usually put at the top of their "must see" list,
our capital city, Edinburgh.
Most people, when they think of Edinburgh,
only think of the Castle,
but there is so much more to see and do,
and I hope to show some of the other sights
in our beautiful capital city on this and the following pages.

The gateway to Holyrood Palace with the Abbey on the left
and Church on the right.
This is the beginning of the Royal Mile.
Visitors may enter the Palace for which there is an entry fee.

The pictures below are (on the right) the Palace courtyard
and (on the left) the Queen's coach.
In the centre is the Palace Church.
On the grounds of the Palace there can be found a gift shop
where various Royal souvenirs can be purchased.

The Royal Mile is famous all over the world
and starts at Holyrood Palace going uphill towards Edinburgh Castle a mile away.
The climb is steep, but the variety of shops and street entertainment make this a very pleasant climb.
During the summer months, the mile can be very busy and full of street vendors selling a variety of wares from jewellery to a relaxing head and neck massage!
During July and August, preparations are being made for the Tattoo and can be an exciting time to visit!

The photo below, shows the view of the mile from near the top.
As well as the various shops and entertainers,
there are abundant restaurants and cafes to suit every taste. You may also notice that in between the buildings there are many small pathways, called closes, some of these are worth investigating,
as there are some small craft shops and cafes to be found there.

Above, just one example of the type of entertainment to be enjoyed on the mile. A jester in full costume, playing Green sleeves on the Lute.

During your walk up the mile,
don't forget to take the time to look up at the buildings you pass.
The architecture is stunning!
This photo, I hope, gives a small glimpse of the beauty
and remarkable craftsmanship in these buildings.
