Wayne Sleep

Wayne grew up on Hartlepool Headland and went to the West Hartlepool Technical High School for Boys.
He found fame in 1966 after joining the Royal Ballet in London.
He was awarded the OBE in 1998.


Ridley Scott

Sir Ridley was born in South Shields and then lived in Stockton on Tees. He studied at Hartlepool College of Art for four years excelling in graphics and then moved on to the Royal College of Art.
He bagan his career as a set designer for the BBC and was quickly promoted to director. Success came to him in 1991 with Thelma and Louise. His other great films include, Blade Runner and Gladiator.

Brian Clough

Brian Clough became the youngest manager in the Football League when he left Sunderland for Hartlepool in 1965.
He transformed the Hartlepool Team and laid the foundations for Pools first ever promotion and went on to greater success with Derby County and Nottingham Forest.

Stuart Drummond

Stuart Drummond a former call centre worker and the part time mascot H' Angus for Hartlepool United helped make the Monkey one of the country's most well known football mascots.
In 2002 Stuart amazed himself and the country by being elected to the £53,000 a year post of Mayor of Hartlepool.

 

 

Phil Middlemiss

Actor Phil Middlemiss formerly of Hart Lane, Hartlepool, became a major star when he played love rat Des Barnes in Coronation Street.
He has also appeared in several other television dramas and is currently part of the regular cast of Where The Heart Is.
Phil has used his high profile name to help several charities.

Brian London

Born in Hartlepool but based in Blackpool, Brian won the British and Commonwealth heavyweight title in 1958.
He also fought the greatest when he took on Muhammed Ali for the world championship at Earls Court in August 1966. Sadly for London, the fight ended in a round three knockout.
His dad Jack London was a champion in wartime, winning the British and Empire titles in 1944.

 

Reg Smythe

Hartlepool born Reg created one of the greatest cartoon characters of all time - Andy Capp.
Andy's beer swilling adventures first appeared in the Daily Mirror in 1957 and have delighted millions of readers ever since. The cartoon can still be found in the Hartlepool Mail and the Mirror.
After more than 40 years away Reg returned to the town in 1976 and died aged 81 in 1998.

Scott Henshall

Since graduating from the University of Northumbria, Dalton Piercy born Scott has become one of the countrie's leading fashion designers.
His designs have appeared in glossy magazines like Vogue and Marie Claire and have been bought up by top London fashion store Liberty.
