The following pages show the construction of a Koi pond. Whilst not totally 'state of the art' I have tried to incorporate ideas and designs offered to me by both experience and the wealth of information available today. Some of the key contributors to my design are listed on the links page. I hope that the finished pond will be able to keep Koi in a stable and safe environment without the prohibitive maintenance workload that goes with some ponds.
So, in June 2002 I decided to plan and build a new Koi pond. My 'old' pond was around 2500 UK gallons and was located around 60ft from the house towards the rear of the garden. Because of this my enjoyment of the pond was limited and more importantly feeding and maintenance routines tended to get completed only during better weather. A growing interest in Koi from my wife Julie meant that the Koi pond was now able to take 'centre stage' in the garden rather than being located in an out of the way space in the garden as the old one was.
Those that have seen the video 'Koi Pond Construction' will see many similarities in design between my pond and the one shown in the video. In truth, it was seeing that video and the landscaping it contained that created that spark to get me started. Thanks to New Vision Video for producing another inspiring work.
There is no doubt that the construction was a challenge. I began late in the year meaning that the worst of the British weather would be upon me. I would be working mainly alone as I wanted to do as much as I possibly could without help. Some help was had from friends in the excavation phase and with delivery and collection of materials but that was all I wanted. Not being a tradesman, in particular, the block-work and brickwork proved to be difficult, time consuming but very rewarding when it turned out reasonably well. The fibre-glassing was the one area where I required some professional help due to my inexperience and the potential pitfalls. For that I must thank Dave Arnold, a true professional, a 'master with the glass' and a great bloke too!
The pond was also infinitely enhanced as a result of the input from some of the most friendly and knowledgeable Koi keepers in the U.K; namely the members that frequent the www.koichat.com bulletin board. Their help, challenges and support got me through some tricky stages and times when my enthusiasm was wearing thin. To them, and the boards proprietor Mark Gardner I offer my thanks.
Hopefully you will enjoy looking through a few months of the ponds construction, please feel free to drop me an email if you wish.
