School meals and Obesity in children

Recently there's been a lot of attention focused on the poor standard of food in Britain's schools. "Why are they so bad?" asked many commentators.

In 1984-85 the Thatcher government abolished the nutritional guidelines for school meals as part of its drive to do away with government regulation and cut spending. It also encouraged schools to raise money by selling off school playing fields and installing vending machines for sweets and fizzy drinks. This resulted in Britain having the fatest and most unfit children in Europe. Yet another example of the Tories crackpot policies creating the problems we face today.
