The Irish in Britain Representation Group was set up in 1981 to foster a positive identity for the Irish in Britain and to give effective representation to our community at a national and local level. We have branches in many parts of Britain, reflecting the diaspora of our community in this country and the varying needs of our people. We are an independent and democratic organisation with a constitution which respects the rights of all Irish people.
The Irish have been settling in Britain for centuries. We are the largest ethnic community in this country, with millions claiming descent, yet our needs as a community have frequently been ignored. Since 1969 our identity and civil rights have been under constant attack as a result of Britain's role in Ireland.
In the twenty-first century, our community is faced with major choices about how we live our lives in this country. We need to unite as a community to challenge the discrimination and prejudices that affect us and our children and take positive action to build a confident and assertive community.
IBRG has always believed in asserting our right to be Irish. Since our beginning, we have been active on a very wide range of issues affecting our community:
Membership of IBRG is open to all who define themselves as Irish, whether Irish-born or born in Britain. We welcome new members who are willing to support the work of the organisation. We have branches nationwide; if you wish to join, please click here.
