Basic chart showing how the body and iris correspond.
This type of chart is not entirely up to date with the latest research
- The irises are a map of the body
- Find your genetically weak organs
- Find your compromised organs
- Find the underlying causes of disease
- See clearly how one symptom is created from other areas
Now mainstream in several countries due to the amount of scientific research on the subject,
iridology has been developing since the early 1800's as a method of determining the state
of health of the body. It is similar to foot or hand reflexology in that the irises of the eyes
present a map of reflexes for the whole body, but differs in that the diagnosis from iridology
is much more accurate, although the iris cannot be manipulated directly for treatment.
When iridology is combined with sclerology (analysis of the white of the eye), a fuller
picture is obtained, and the relative importance of some areas of the body to the overall disease
process can be established. Dr. John Whitman Ray, founder of Body Electronics formed a combined
analysis he called IRIS - SCLERA INTEGRATED DIAGNOSIS.
The iris is made up of radial fibres over a blue layer as is clearly visible in this picture.
If an iris is pigmented as above then the determination of certain factors
in iridology becomes more difficult as they depend on clearly seeing the fibre structure. Green is
a non-obscuring pigment (actually yellow over the blue) so does not create a problem in
analysis, However brown pigment will often totally obscure the fibres. The existence of and
location of pigment itself is however, part of the iridology analysis.
What Iridology & Sclerology Can Determine ...
...A person's constitutional strength, which is the ability of the body to withstand stresses before breaking down into disease; inherited weaknesses of organs or other tissues in the body can also be determined. This is connected to the density of the fibres in the iris. If the eye is heavily pigmented (usually brown pigment over the top of blue) the fibres within the iris cannot be seen and this particular assessment in iridology is not so easy.
...The depth of disease at any place in the body can be determined. This includes whether the area is inflamed, healing, degenerating, over-active or under-active, how good the nerve and blood supply is etc.. Again easier if not covered with pigment.
...The relationship of symptoms to problems in other areas (e.g., the digestive system, lymphatic system, organs etc.) is often possible. For instance a shoulder problem could have its cause as nerve irritation from the colon and simply will not yield to treatment until the colon is addressed. This type of relationship obvious in iridology but is overlooked in many other disciplines.
...Mental and emotional patterns which can sometimes be apparent due to certain signatures in the iris or sclera or the placement of certain structures there. For instance in the top picture the dark radial lines close to the top of the iris coming from the central portion would usually indicate someone who puts the needs of others first, to their own detriment.
...Problems which are developing, but have not reached a level where they are causing obvious problems. According to iridology analysis, the top picture shows weaknesses in the lung, heart and breast areas. This is the left iris. The woman had breast cancer in the left breast, but no known problems in the heart or lung.
...When problems are really healing rather than just balance brought back to the body (symptoms reappear at intervals or when the "balancer" is stopped), or suppression having taken place. Many times this involves the reduction of pigment if there has been any, but could also include a lessening of the darkness of an area.

For example in this case it would be expected that the darkened area at 3 o'clock would lighten
given enough strong detoxification focussed onto this area of the body (the colon). The ribcage,
which will reflex to this darkened area is deformed somewhat, with a heavily sunken breastbone.
This iris also shows lymphatic congestion (white blobs) and tissue acidity leading to
inflammation (overall whiteness). This person has a debilitating autoimmune disease.

This is an example of a sclera picture showing a blood vessel vertically up from the iris
(pituitary). There is a blue dot on the end of the vessel which signifies a lowered immunity
due to trace mineral and enzyme insufficiency. In this woman the blue dots disappeared after
about 3 years of a naturopathic therapeutic regime.

Here is an iris with a
mineral ring - a white ring close to the outer edge.
This ring is also called a
cholesterol ring or a
sodium ring by
some iridologists. It denotes hardening of the arteries and
may or may not coincide
with raised blood cholesterol as shown in a conventional test. This shows the state of
the arteries, not the blood. See the article
The Cholesterol Myth.
I have seen several cases of this ring becoming more translucent over years of a good nutrition
programme and body electronics, though I have not seen one disappear completely.
Limitations of Iridology & Sclerology
It cannot give a conventional label to a disease such as cancer, multiple sclerosis etc..
Serious diseases involve multiple organ malfunction and large scale undermining of the
basic metabolic processes in the body. Whilst many of these processes are reflected in the
iris, the absolute presence of a conventionally labelled disease is not. Remember, the orthodox
medical label is a summary of the symptoms which it treats, not the underlying
causes which are the focus of a more holistic approach.
It cannot get as much detailed information from people with purely brown eyes since in
these cases there is a coating of brown pigment in the iris.
Treatment Following Iridology
Some treatments which fit in well with the information obtained from iridology are
naturopathy, nutritional therapy, herbal medicine and reflexology or Body Electronics. It
is difficult to find a major use for the study in cases where treatment is purely by
for example, acupuncture or classical homoeopathy for which the diagnosis is integral to
the discipline.
Use of Iridology in Body Electronics
Iridology and sclerology have traditionally been taught as part of Body Electronics.
They show areas of the body that are under stress and would benefit from the pointholding
of Body Electronics. Additionally Body Electronics can occassionally see changes to the iris
of the eye, especially to brown pigment WITHIN A SESSION of pointholding. Change to the
iris that happens this fast is thought to be impossible by most teachers of iridology,
but shows the effect of the depth of change of consciousness possible within such a discipline.
I use a digital camera for taking photographs of the iris and sclera. The Nikon Coolpix
995 has an excellent macro (close up) function and produces clear pictures which are
adequate for most iridology and sclerology purposes. I use a full spectrum bulb as the
light source which gives a good degree of accuracy to the colours. Digital photography has an
advantage over standard photography in that pictures are available for viewing on a computer
screen immediately. If you would like to see an example of the quality of an iris
photograph from the Coolpix 995 click on the picture below:
