- "2000 Millenium
Year Concerts"
- On Saturday June 24th for our main 'Millenium Concert', we performed the VERDI
REQUIEM. We were joined by: The Shepshed
Singers, The Charnwood Choral Society and the Broom Leys Concert
Orchestra, plus soloists Eleanor Lloyd (soprano), Adrienne Murray
(mezzo-soprano), Keith Halliday (tenor) and Russell Matthews
(bass). The Hermitage Leisure Centre, Whitwick resounded with
the music of this great work - and the sound of over 150 voices
accompanied by a full orchestra was fantastic. From the almost
overpowering sound of the brass 'calling the dead from their
slumber' to the whisper quietness of the Sanctus and Agnus Dei,
the performance was entrancing - a wonderful experience to be
remembered for many years to come.

SOMETHING
DIFFERENT
-
- On Tuesday 11th July, at 7.00pm, BLCS hosted a 'GOSPEL
SINGING' workshop at Whitwick Methodist Curch which
was taken by the renowned Musical Director Ken Burton.
- On the following evening there was a Gospel Concert
at King Edward VII College, Coalville, featuring all the
singers from the workshop. This was an inspiring and joyful event
for all those taking part (and hopefully the 'audience' too).
- OTHER CONCERTS TO THE END
OF 2000
- Friday and Saturday, 24th and 25th November a Messiah
Workshop at Hugglescote Parish Church.
- Monday 4th December - LOROS Concert at Leicester
Cathedral
- Saturday 9th December Handel's MESSIAH at Our
Lady of Lourdes Church, Ashby-de-la-Zouch. This is
to help the church celebrate its successful completion of a project
to raise £15,000 to build and equip a church in India
part of the Great Jubilee of the Year 2000 worldwide celebrations.
- All the performances of The Messiah were enjoyed by
many people, but the one on 9th December at Our Lady of Lourdes
church was particularly enjoyable. This was a 'first' for BLCS
at Ashby; the church was packed, the acoustics were brilliant
and the whole evening had a particular magic, which was summed
up by Fr. Peter Tierney in his 'thank-you' message at the end.
Thanks to all the soloists and members of the orchestra who helped
make this concert such a success.
- On Saturday 23rd December we have our final event of 2000
our traditional Christmas Concert at Hugglescote
Parish Church, with guests, Enderby Band. This is always
a popular concert, and to ensure a seat, tickets should be purchased
in advance.

PAST CONCERTS AND EVENTS:
Over the last year or so, we have performed the following:
The first concert of our 98/99 season was Rossini's "Petite
Messe Solenelle", which we performed in Christ Church, Coalville
on 14th November 1998 at 7.30pm. We were joined by well-known
local soloists and the accompaniment was as originally written
by Rossini - for two pianos and the organ. We also sang the lovely
'Cantique de Jean Racine' by Gabriel Fauré.
The audience was 'select', but the concert was greatly enjoyed
by everyone.
Our Christmas Carol Concert was on the 19th December 1998 in
Hugglescote Parish Church, when we were joined by our friends
in the Enderby Brass Band - this is always a marvellous part of
the Christmas Celebrations, which we hope to repeat!
Our EASTER CONCERT in 1999 was at Holy Cross Church, Whitwick,
on 20th March - (Stainer's 'Crucifixion' and Maunder's 'Olivet
to Calvary'). The soloists were all from our own choir members,
and each was excellent. The whole event was appreciated by the
audience (congregation?) who joined in the seven or so hymns included
within the two works. It was very fitting for the season of Lent.
Included in the progamme sheets given to the audience was an interesting
piece about J H Maunder, the composer of'Olivet to Calvary', written
by the Revd. Michael Counsell, the vicar of St. Augustine's church
in Forest Hill, London. If you would like to see his report, called
'Still Maundering', click here
and follow the link to John Henry Maunder.
We finished the 1998/1999 season with a concert called 'Show
Stoppers' - the music of Lerner & Loewe - at the Hermitage
Leisure Centre, which, with soloists and a large orchestra, was
a wonderful evening.
For the first concert of our
1999/2000 season, on Saturday November 13th 1999, we performed
the Mozart REQUIEM and Rutter REQUIEM, at Holy Cross Church, Whitwick
with Orchestra and Soloists. A large audience greatly enjoyed
these contrasting works. Many people who have never heard a Requiem
performed envisage dull, dreary 'dirges', but nothing could be
further from the truth. Parts of the Mozart Requiem are used in
TV adverts (Mozart is probably turning in his grave!) and the
beauty of the Rutter, especially the Lux Aeterna, is captivating.
Our annual CHRISTMAS CAROL CONCERT was held with Enderby Brass
Band in Hugglescote Parish Church on December 18th 1999. The church
was packed, and everyone seemed to agree that it was a wonderful
start to Christmas week - the very 'Spirit of Christmas'.
We also took part in a Christmas Concert at DERBY CATHEDRAL
on December 22nd. In addition to the usual Christmas carols etc.
this concert included the 'Halleluja Chorus' from the Messiah
and the 'Grand March' from Aida.
