Socialist Labour Party

As you can see from their manifesto below the Socialist Labour Party is basically on a nostalgia trip for the 'good old days' of old Labour. Their particular take on this is a good dose of little Britisher nationalism expressed in the form of withdrawal from the European Union.

Most of the SLP 'wish list' one could agree with. The problem is that to implement it would take a revolutionary change. In this sense the SLP, inasmuch as it influences anybody, promotes dangerous reactionary nonsense in suggesting that capitalism could be overthrown, because that is what the implementation of their election manifesto would require, by electing some SLP MP's. Luckily the SLP is a rapidly dwindling force which has only been able to stand its 116 candidates due to a significant injection of outside funds.

Election Manifesto

The SLP launched its election manifesto on Monday 30 April. Vote Socialist Labour Party

The Socialist Labour Party was founded to campaign for an end to hardship, inequality, injustice and despair throughout England, Scotland and Wales, above all to fight for a Socialist Britain.

National Health Service - we demand an NHS available to all at the time of need, upon demand and completely free of charge.

Education - our Party calls for an education system which provides free, high-quality comprehensive education for all, with proper finance for students at college and university. It is not acceptable to have a two-tier system which enables the leaders of New Labour and the Tories to send their children for a privileged education which is not available to children in deprived areas.

Pensioners - we call for immediate restoring of the 'link' with the annual increase in wages or RPI. This would immediately increase a single pensioner's weekly income by 30 a week, and 48 for couples. This policy would simply give pensioners an income which was promised as long ago as 1978!

Housing - to eliminate homelessness, Britain needs to build or refurbish one million homes per year for the next five years. The introduction of this policy alongside an end to the selling off of public housing will end homelessness once and for all.

Employment - we have in real terms approximately 7 million people of employable age without a job. The problem of unemployment can only be resolved by the introduction of a four-day working week, a ban on non-essential overtime, and a ban on non-essential overtime and voluntary retirement on full pay at 55.

European Union - the Socialist Labour Party is committed to Britain's withdrawal from the European Union. Membership of the EU costs Britain's taxpayers 10 billion per year, more than enough to restore the 'link' which Tory and New Labour Governments have taken away from pensioners. Our Party is opposed to the introduction of a 'European Army' and demands Britain's immediate withdrawal from NATO.

Public ownership - privatisation has been an unmitigated disaster with our rail system in chaos, massive job losses in steel, coal, telecommunications, electricity, gas and water industries. These privatised industries and services produce an annual profit of over 30 billion, money which could and should be used for pensioners and to help fund our health and education systems.

Socialism - We believe that common ownership of the means of production is the only long-term solution to the problems facing the British economy.

Only Socialist policies can create a caring, democratic society for all our people regardless of age, gender, colour, religion and creed.

On 7 June, we urge you to vote for the Socialist Labour Party

Leader Arthur Scargill.
