First Hole in the Wall

19th November 2005 and the reason behind the railway becomes clear. This wall is to be replaced by a wooden fence as it is failing down - literally. The star blocks are to become ballast for the track and foundations for the front drive block paving. A wheel barrow would just be too simple - a railway is the answer.
Before starting on wall rebuilding I need to tidy up the soil around the side gate. So today started moving soil in old 10 ltrs paint tubs - seems to work quite well. 2 stone 5 lbs, thats 33 lbs, say 15 kg, so load has density of 1.5, say 40% voidage, soil density is 2.5 After 30 trips with 2 tubs I was tiring and running out of light.
A chance to run in the sunlight of autumn - its also good to see the steam. Working hard I got through two water tanks of water. I am getting better at firing - lost steam once when not enough coal on the fire. The trick is to use the steam running round without loosing too much pressure and then keeping the fire white / yellow hot whilse loading the train. This goods traffic is very demanding for steam with lots of stop / start. I still keep leaving the brake on and wonder why going forward is so difficult.
