Stortford Railway
Railcar No 5, running at BHLR, Pecorama, Devon.
Technical details of No 5 are given below (all measurements are in inches):
Length: 90
Length of trailer: 50
Length of tractor: 38
Height of floor above rail level: 6
Height of roof above rail level: 55
Width: 24
Width of door: 16
Length of passenger seat: 41
Bonnet length: 14
Cab length: 24
There is a 10.5 inch "tongue" added to the tractor floor and a corresponding "hole" in the trailer so that the two may be articulated together. A steel drawbar links the two.
The tractor has an approx 20 inch wheelbase with approx four-inch wheels which are linked by rods. The two quarter-horsepower motors drive a chain to a lay-shaft; another chain drives the wheels. An electronic controller controls these and power is provided by two batteries in the bonnet, giving a 24 volt system.

Under construction: the articulation is not yet built.
With the double-leaf, outward opening doors open.
No 5 is the mostly widely travelled of the Stortford Railway's stock. It has been seen at Betws-y-Coed, Pecorama, East Herts, Coalyard, Weston Park, Echill's Wood and Willow Wood Railways.
It is possible that railcars may be available for sale. Both the
bonnet front (as here) and flat front are
possible, as is a longer trailer unit. The price would be in the
region of £8000.
