      Capt. John R. McGaughy

On Virginia's blood stained field,

Hearts were filled with battle flame,

For honor was their only shield,

The rest was left with fate & fame.

Youthful heirs then tried so high,

On glory's page their name to leave,

And fierce was then the battle cry

As glory sought the scroll to weave.

But many years have gone apace,

And Time has settled strife at last,

Time had marked his youthful face,

With memory's image of the past.

He, whose form on funeral bier,

We bear, in sorrow, to the grave,

No more to have his words of cheer,

His joyous soul we still will crave.

Happier soul was ne'er on earth,

Happier now in its release,

And in the new transcendent birth,

He will have the longed for peace.

Notes for McGaughy Family:

- According to the Anglican baptism records at the Quebec garrison, for Adelaide & George, their father John W. McGaughy was a soldier (in the Band) of H.M. 79th Highland Regiment, listed as sergeant in 1836.  By the time of John's baptism in 1838 at the same garrison, he is listed as late of the 15th Band.

- The 79th was a Scottish Regiment sent to Ireland in 1820, then onto Quebec in September 1825.  They were in Ft. Henry, Kingston, Ontario in 1830-1.  The Regiment returned to Portsmouth, England in 1836.  Once the 79th returned to the UK, John appeared to have joined the 15th.  As York (now Toronto) Ontario was also a military base, it is possible that their child William was born there rather than in New York.
