PUBLISHED THIS YEAR..!

... a new version of the
Benson War Memorial and Graves Book of Remembrance.
It was edited by the late William Burtt (husband of Janet Burtt,
co-author of our Benson - A Century of
Change) and researched by Alastair Jack. This gives a
deeply moving insight into the people behind the names on the
War Memorial and on the War Graves, arranged chronologically, and
succinctly explains the circumstances of their death. This new
edition has been reset with some additional material and an
index to names, and will have an attractive
full-colour laminated cover.

... AND
IN 2006!

In November
2006, we launched this new book, researched and written by local
artist Anthony Wilder
and called
Victorian
Painters of Wallingford - a tale of two dynasties.
It is about two eminent Victorian artistic families who lived
in Wallingford at the turn of the 20th century, the
Hayllars and
the Leslies and their neighbour and fellow painter, Claude
Rowbotham.
(Incidentally, Anthony's father, Will, also a noted
local artist, was the subject of our original publication,
PoW Sketchbook.)

IN PREPARATION
Two
projects are in preparation. The first is a
History of
Wallingford
School from its foundation
as a Grammar School by Walter Bigg in 1659 to
the modern day comprehensive school, including the relatively
short-lived Secondary Modern School. It has been researched and written by former
Wallingford School pupil
Jeanne Money and co-written by
local historian Judy Dewey. It will be profusely illustrated. Watch this space for more details!
Work is also
in progress on a frequently requested
brief History of Wallingford.
Written by local
historians Judy & Stuart Dewey,
and designed to appeal
equally to residents and visitors alike, the emphasis will be to
produce an affordable and readable history of the town from its
Saxon origins to the modern day. This will be a much needed
replacement - with considerably more up-to-date information -
for the authors' Book of Wallingford, now long out of
print. |
