Most people tend to think that modern music is faster than the old time standards but this is not the case. Modern music has a much stronger emphasis on percussion and therefore seems faster. There are many kinds of Slow Dances. Essentially dance instructors had great difficulty trying to dance the traditional ballroom dances to the more modern tunes that were just too slow! So they came up with variants to deal with it. There are no standard competitions for these dances and they are not pushed in the larger studios for that reason. Sometimes called Social Foxtrot the Slow Rhythm we teach is a variant of the Foxtrot. It starts with two walks forward and includes side sways and turns all done as "Slows" (stepping on the down beat or "booms" of the music). In the Ballroom style, Slow Rhythm travels around the floor in an anti-clockwise direction with the gentleman facing the outside of the dance floor and taking the Ballroom hold. It is excellent for dealing with the romantic slow ballads often played in today's night clubs and is one of the first and most popular dances we teach.
