with comments from Philip Grosset "I'm attaching 4 photos I recently took on a trip to Cuba. I took them with a digital camera, which I'm not very impressed with. They don't come out as crisp as I would like them (as they do w/a 35mm). It was hard to choose 4, as I took almost 600 pictures (hence, the lack of resolution). Would love to hear what you think. Thank you!" (Nikki Ruiz, Los Angeles, CA) |

| I think your subject on the left was well chosen, but the version I got was a little dark, so, on the right, I've lightened it. I agree with you that the picture could be sharper. I'm wondering whether you held the camera quite steady enough. But it's certainly an amusing photo. |

| This is a very successful combination of really effective silhouettes and a bright sunset. You've got the sun and the lighthouse at intersections of thirds, and this helps to make it a striking picture. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||

| You've another amusing shot on the left here. On the right, I've smartened it up a bit by straightening out the leaning background, allowing more space for the woman to point into than behind her, and reversing the picture as our eyes usually travel more naturally from lerft to right. I think it's a really good fun idea. |

| On the left: another well spotted picture . It's even more effective, though, if you come in closer, as I've done on the right. Altogether, an interesting and imaginative set of photos. "Enclosed are photos taken with my nikon n80. I hope to photograph kids with special needs (i was a teacher for 5 years) that may have trouble in a studio setting. I set my camera on auto and use fugi 400 speed film. The photo of the girls face was taken with my digital camera. Thank you." (Shannon Curcio, schaumburg, Illinois) |

| The use of natural lighting is very effective here, but were you using a wide angle lens setting that slightly distorted the face/body relationship? He/she doesn't look too relaxed! | |||||||||||||||||||||||||

| This girl looks much happier - if rather cold! On the right, I've tried moving closer in so as to add even more emphasis to her twinkling expression. I think this works very well. |

| Another happy expression, but there's rather a lot of tree so, on the right, I've tried coming in closer. This seems to me to be even better. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||
| A rather puzzled expression. Nothing wrong with that, but a more lively expression might be more fun. When photographing children, also try to capture really characteristic shots of them, as when they are totally immersed in what they are doing. They don't always have to be looking at you! | |||||||||||||||||||||||||

Reply from Shannon Curcio: "thank you for the comments. i am learning how to look into a camera and get the best view so i do se that my photos look better cropped. also i agree kids look better involved in activities but these are all kids i know (including my own) so to get the to actually look at me is a treat. thanks for your feedback." |
