"Hi there! My name is Ariane, I am 20 yrs young and live in Virginia. I was surfing the web trying to find some places where I could send some of my photos to a specialist. I have 4 I would like to send. And then I have one more so I will send that one in another email. I hope to hear back from you soon. I am not really sure what to ask you. I took photography in high school and now I am a junior in college. I have not taken any classes because the junior college I attended did not have any courses. But I have kept up with it and I love it and hope to continue! I just want someone's opinion. Thanks again, and I can't wait to hear from you!" (Ariane Schrinel)

Your photo on the left is enlivened by the bright grass and colorful leaves, but, as so often, it would be more interesting to position the cat at one of the intersections of thirds, as I've done on the right. I've been wondering about the blue object just above the cat's head. I've no idea what it is!

In your photo on the left, you've again positioned the cat's head right in the middle of the picture. As explained on my Brief Summary page, this isn't necessarily the best place for it. On the right, I've tried an alternative that also cuts out most of the overexposed white forerground.

This is a bit of a muddle as the emphasis seems to be on an out of focus ear! It isn't clear what you were trying to show.

Silhouette
This is by far the most successful of these photos. But, again, why have your main subject right in the middle of the picture? In my version on the right, I've left space for him to look into, and I think the result is really pleasing.

Reply from Ariane Schrinel: "Thank you so much for responding so quickly and putting my pics on your page! I was so excited. Also, thank you for your comments! I took another picture using your advice. I think it came out good."

This is quite an amusing picture, but there's not all that much to see in it. Wouldn't it have been more interesting to have also shown us more of the road ahead?

"These are 4 photographs I took at a local race meeting. I used a Canon EOS 500n with a 75 - 300mm telephoto lens. There was some cropping and manipulation in Photoshop, and the B&W photo was originally a colour print. I look forward to your comments." (Lloyd Penpraze)

I assume you intended this to be blurred - and it's not just an unsuccessful panning shot. It certainly suggests movement. It's often a better idea, though, to have at least part of the picture sharp so as to make it obvious that any blurring really is intentional!

Motor bikes
These are both highly effective pictures, with the one on the left being particularly successful. The emphasis with the one on the right is on the bike rather than on the rider, but I presume this is what you intended. I see why you cropped the pictures this way, but the resulting letterbox shape looks just a little odd.

This is a fine dramatic picture, but would have been even better if we could have seen the rider's eyes. Otherwise he remains very much a mystery man. Again, this may have been your intention. Altogether, an accomplished set of photos.
