with comments from Philip Grosset "I came across your website, and your invitation for people to send you their photos for criticism. I'd like to take advantage of this, as I've been looking for an un-biased opinion lately. I'm a true amature; though I've been shooting for about 9 years now, I don't feel like i've made much progress, for various reasons (time, money, lack of a mentor). I would really appreciate you taking a look at the attached photos, and letting me know what you think. They're not what I consider my best, but unfortunately, they're the only recent ones I have scanned at the moment =) Dave-Simon.jpg - My brother and his son. Of the ones i've sent you, I like this photo the best. I was attempting to show, at the same time, the amazing love and devotion of the father, to the innocence and curiosity of the son...or maybe i was hoping for too much? Mark-Susan.jpg - This was a simple attempt to capture a moment of the subject's relationship...fun, loving, happy..and maybe a bit sarcastic. Jaya1.jpg - basically just of-the-moment...could be framed better, i know. Anyway, if you have time, I would appreciate it. If not, then I thank you for your website, I found a lot of useful information on it. Regards and good health." (Josh Salit) |

| I think you've caught just the moment you wanted in your photo on the left. Remove the empty space, as on the right, and you've a very successful photo, although there are a couple of little blemishes on the child's face that could perhaps be removed. |

This photo isn't quite sharp enough, but again you've caught a happy moment. It could be improved by clipping off the empty space on the right. | ||||||||||||||||||

| As you say, your photo on the left could be framed better, as on the right. Once again, try to concentrate attention on your main subject. But these are a really lively and interesting set of photos. "Hello, My name is Charlene Schneckenberger and I am from Elma, New York. A town south of Buffalo. I am sending a picture of Buffalo Creek taken from a bridge. The picture was taken around 3:30 pm with a 200 zoom. Shutter was at 30 and the F 5.6. I like the picture, but I am very new to photography. I am using my late father's Cannon AE1. The lens cover says Olympics 1980, so I am sure it is a few years older then that. Thank you for your time!" (Charlene Schneckenberger) |

| I like your photo on the left too. However, it might be even more effective if the top of the waterfall didn't almost divide the picture in half, as this doesn't make it clear where the main interest is meant to be. I personally find the colors in the background the most attractive part, so on the right I've tried rearranging the scene so as to draw attention to these - but unfortunately this loses part of the waterfall. Perhaps if you had not zoomed in quite so close, you might have been able to keep in all the waterfall, but with the top of it just a third of the way up the picture, so including more of the greenery above it. I've also straightened out the top of the waterfall so that it doesn't slightly slope down on its right. It's a most colorful and pleasing picture. Reply from Charlene Schneckenberger: "Thank you for reviewing my photo. I can't wait to go and reshoot." "Please tell me what you think about this picture. I took this of my daughter and her boyfriend. i used kodak film and my macro lense. This was actually developed at a one hour photo place. I think they are a cute couple---especially the girl --Ha!" | I think your photo on the left is very successful. All I would suggest is that, instead of having your daughter's eyes about half way up the picture, it might look even more pleasing if they were raised to two thirds of the way up, as on the right. But it is a very happy portrait. Well done! | |||||||||||||||||||
