"Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge!!!! What a kind, loving thing to do. Talk about "giving back!" I am an amateur, I am using an AE1 Canon camera that my husband bought for me almost 23 years ago. I love my camera and taking pictures, getting them developed is like Christmas, always such a surprise and sometimes a disappointment. I am toying with the idea of purchasing a new camera, the Canon Elan 7E. I tried one out for size at the camera store and loved the EOS feature, I found it to be amazing. I wonder, will it take any better photos than my AE1?
I would like a experienced photographer such as yourself to critic my photos and make any suggestions you think might improve my work. I never use a manual setting, only automatic. This is because I really don't know how to use the camera manually. I have been doing lots of reading and I am getting close to experimenting with the manual settings on my camera! I put my photos on blank cards and give them as gifts at special times for special people...it brings me such a feeling of pride and joy to see the smiles on their faces :>) So, please, your thoughts! Many Thanks to you." ( Patricia K. Plucker, Williamsburg, MI 49690)

This is a bit too subdued. It might have been an idea to include someone or something to give some idea of scale - and some foreground interest might have helped.
Trees

Watermelon It's a pity that the watermelon isn't really in focus because this is a really nicely composed picture.

I think your photo on the left is very effective. You've got in really close and attractively composed the picture. An alternative would have been to use a simple plain background. as I've tried on the right, but your original version works very well and suggests an indoor setting.

Another good picture of yours on the left. You title it "Grampa's Grapes…all of 2001", so I expect you want to show every one of them! If it had been the sheen on the grapes that mattered most to you, you could have moved in even closer, as I have done on the right.

I can't really say whether you'd take better pictures with another camera - it all depends on you! But a more versatile camera gives you more control over what you are doing, if this is what you want. A good source of information about cameras ("Photography Review") is listed on my Photo Links page.

Reply from Patricia K Plunker: "Thank you!!! Yes, if only the watermelon was in focus! I loved your ideas and I will use them in my endeavors of photography! I have not been able to complete your files of photos as yet, but, I am learning so much in just the few that I have seen. Your site is a book of knowledge for the armature photographer, as well as the more experienced one. So many photos to see and so many ideas to ponder over. I really appreciate your critic and tell me, can I submit 4 more pictures on another day...or is one critic per person the rule? I can understand just one...you would never get a break if we all submitted our work on a regular basis. Photography is a wonderful form of expressing me, myself and sharing it with others. I love it. I am hooked on the click of the shutter sound. So...my thanks to you for making my love, photography, even better. One of your points that I am hearing is "get closer", I love that idea, I have been shy to do that, but now, I am going to be more aggressive with that technique. Cheers, Patty."

In response to many requests, I've now changed the system so that there is no limit on the number of photos you can send me - but there is now a small charge for all but the first one. Please see my submitting photos page.

"I'm Dan, from Vancouver, Canada. I was very pleased to find your web site; it was something I was looking for a long time. I am a beginner, this Pentax MZ 30 is my first SLR. I'm sending you 4 pictures (3 taken in Tahiti and one in Hawaii). What do you think? I am positive that your professional opinion will help me in achieving much better results. Although I'll be away for the rest of the month, I can't wait to read your thoughts! Thank you very much! Best regards." (Dan, Vancouver)

Your photo on the left is certainly bright and attractive, but if you come in even closer, as I've done on the right, you can bring out the striking symmetrical pattern even more clearly.

Your photos continue on the next page. By the way, when sending me photos, do please include your whole name!
